I Love It, But Will I Wear It? A Matching Shirt and Skirt

May 20, 2026

Yes, this shirt sort of feels like a pajama top… but tucked into the skirt, maybe with a belt…

Shirt – Madewell; skirt – Madewell

I followed the same images that I showed on Wednesday, so a few outfits will look similar, and you may recognize some accessories too!

This is NOT done because I’m inherently bone-deep lazy (although I could make a case for that!), but because I really want everybody to grow accustomed to wearing things frequently. But better, buy less, wear the heck out of it!

First up – a white cardigan. Always so useful in warm weather. And pink pearl jewelry… big deep sigh of smittenness…

Shirt – Madewell; earrings – Ninemoo; cotton cardigan – Vineyard Vines; skirt – Madewell; bracelet – Angel Barocco; bag – Brunna.Co; sandals – Söfft

Roll the sleeves just a bit, and pile on the gold! If one was inclined to try to make it through a season or two without buying clothes (and seriously, almost all of us could manage that!), buying a family of accessories would be a smart alternative. A gold bag and flats hold a lot of appeal to me right now…

Shirt – Madewell; earrings – The Met Store; necklace – Astor & Orion; skirt – Madewell; bag – Olga Berg; ballet flats – Jeffrey Campbell

In the truly hot weather, linen pants are workhorses. Yes, they wrinkle, the first 20 times you wear them, and then they get soft and drapey and don’t wrinkle as much! And they last for years and years…

Earrings – Open Edit; Shirt – Madewell; sleeveless top – L.L.Bean; white linen pants – Caslon; bracelets – brook & york; tote bag – Kurt Geiger; sandals – NineWest

Why yes, if you can find matching socks, why wouldn’t you grab them?

Shirt – Madewell; carved opal earrings – Kamaria; white shorts – Lands’ End; hoodie – Eileen Fisher; socks – Hue; bracelet – Kamaria; sneakers – OluKai

Just because it’s a skirt doesn’t mean it has to be dressy. And for what it’s worth, Paris was absolutely packed with baseball caps when I was there in December. We saw a store quite close to our hotel that sold NOTHING but baseball caps in a range of fabrics. Not just for the people from the US anymore…

Tee shirt – Madewell, cap – L.L.Bean; threader earrings – Ettika; backpack – High Sierra; skirt – Madewell; driving loafers – Rothy’s

I’m not certain that this sweater is a perfect match for the skirt, but I AM certain that it’s close enough for clothes! Some dressy accessories, and you could wear this to all but the more formal events:

iced orchid sweater – L.L.Bean; earrings – The Met Store; necklace – The Met Store; bag – Lilly Pulitzer; skirt – Madewell; mules – Talbots

(L.L.Bean has a lot of clothes in this iced orchid color right now…)

I could easily picture someone going away for a long weekend to celebrate a wedding (their own?) or an anniversary, or just a romance, and taking all of these things.

And maybe the romance is with yourself. Dress up! You deserve to love yourself, right?

love,
Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, we started with a beige tee shirt, beige pants, and a beige striped cardigan…

Love the color! Love the idea! Love the dressing it up and down! But, I have to be honest…I REALLY hate the shirt. I had a shirt like this some years ago…but mine was from J. Crew. I ended up giving it away because even tucked in and/or belted, it looked like a pajama top on me. It might look great on someone taller or, shall I say, better endowed. I’m short and not super busty and it looked sloppy on me personally. It went to Goodwill, where I’m sure it found the woman who was meant to have it.

That being said, I’m with you on the baseball caps. I am a dedicated baseball cap wearer. While I’m a Santa Barbara native, I have lived on the Maine coast for most of my adult life. Wearing a Red Sox or LL Bean hat here is mandatory…much like owning at least one flannel shirt and a pair of classic LL Bean duck boots. I also like to keep the sun off my face without wearing a big, floppy hat all the time. My ball caps are weekend mandatory, whether on a hike or out to lunch! Thank you for including a ‘dressy’ one!

I really appreciate the idea behind the post, how to wear pieces different ways and get more use out of what you have. PLEASE KEEP DOING THESE!

I always want to love a two-piece set, but without fail, it looks like pajamas on me. Your pajama comment about the top made me giggle.

I love the idea, but the separates would have to be different colors for me. I can’t do one color dressing, I have to have a few different colors in an outfit. I would lean into white, chambray, denim, browns (it looked like there was some in the stripe) to round this out.

I also want to say: keep bringing these please! Even if the colors or cut of some items are not for me, I’m enjoying a lot these combos! Certainly it helps me get rid of the silly idea that creeps back from time to time that some colors are ‘memorable. So what! That would onky mean there’s still people with more time than they should…!
This one particularly, makes me want to cut the sleeves. Still fun and gets me inspired to mix and match with more purpose.
    Blessings to all!

I am OK with the somewhat sloppy pajama fit of the shirt in this one! I often end up wearing my button up shirts as lightweight jackets anyway, so I would readily pop a tank/T underneath and wear the shirt open. It isn’t to everyone’s style, but I like a relaxed, slouchy “volume + volume” outfit from time to time. And I would get a good amount of wear from the pieces worn separately.

I think it was Beth T who reminded us that it’s best to wash both pieces together each time so that there isn’t differential fading from washing, and that’s got me thinking about the two piece dress in an exuberant coral floral print I have lined up to wear this summer – I will almost assuredly forget this sage advice and wash them separately so that the top (a sleeveless blouse) gets a lot more washing than the skirt. It’ll be interesting to see if the color in the top holds up. I find that it can be hard to predict whether/how much a given item will fade with washing.

I hope you have success. I only mentioned it because I had several skirt/top two piece outfits in the 1980’s. The skirt or the top always ended up being worn more than the other so faded fast. Perhaps intersperse the wearing of the top with complimentary tee shirts until you wash both items together.

The system of having a two-piece dress makes sense to me, even though today’s and Wednesday’s color schemes don’t work for me. Easy enough to visualize the idea working in a different palette. Wednesday’s print combo with solid-color additional pieces is more interesting in the outfit ideas you put together. So my vote is for more print, two-pieces dresses as you always add a solid color skirt for more dressy occasion options.

Both shirt and skirt are available in indigo. Some vertical darts, front and back, could help tame the “pajama” effect and still allow the shirt to be worn as a loose jacket over a tank or tee.

Thank you again for finding a patterned top and skirt that might also be worn as a dress. Here’s hoping more designers will take the potential versatility of this combination into consideration when creating their lines. Since I’m over 65, I hope to find combinations that aren’t the overtly big floral matronly look, prefer smaller abstract florals or, like today, a stripe that has more than one color possibility. Please continue this quest, it is much appreciated, and something I look for when I have to travel, particularly for destination weddings, (we have a lot of those in our family right now) where there are several events, and limited packing space.

I love the colour of this which fits nicely with Wednesday’s floral outfit. I do have a similar colour skirt but it’s best with a shirt top to hide the waistband. I would not tuck in the shirt into an elastic waist skirt

I’m currently wearing a pink/lilac floral (roses) skirt with a lilac short sleeve blouse over the top made of a stretchy crinkle texture.

I’d add in silver grey linen trousers and silver jewellery. My best purchase this month is a pair of silver trainer style shoes.

I also love the pieces and I love pinks but I wonder how I would wear it. I do love this series exploring two piece sets. I used to buy them regularly in the 90s and then they sort of disappeared so I’m glad they’re back. I just ordered the clear blue and white stripe seersucker pant set from Lands End. If it all fits well, it will work really well with my other warm weather items.
