She wants peace. Calm. Not having to think about what to pack or what to wear. She wants the wardrobe equivalent of this:
She particularly wants green, mixed with that “old paint, peeling off of the barn” shade of beige…
It wasn’t a settled choice until she saw this color – called faded sage. THIS was just what she wanted:
Seersucker top – L.L.Bean; necklace – Sita Nevado; earrings – 2028; sweater – L.L.Bean; seersucker shirt – L.L.Bean; chinos – L.L.Bean; seersucker shorts – L.L.Bean; crossbody bag – The Sak; sneakers – adidas
The beige was easy – she just saw it on Friday here on The Vivienne Files! She changed the jewelry to better suit her…
Shirt – J.Crew; huggie hoop earrings – Monica Vinader; necklace – Anthropologie; tee shirt – J.Crew; pants – J.Crew; bracelets – Nordstrom; tote bag – L.L.Bean; shorts – J.Crew; loafers – Easy Spirit
The night before her first weekend away, she assembled her tiny spring wardrobe, and was tremendously satisfied. It would be difficult to put together a truly ugly outfit from this:
She really didn’t WANT to think about outfits, but she took a solid three minutes and came up with ideas to get her through to the truly hot weather:
Now, when she’s away on a break, she can concentrate on really important things, like reading, napping, baking cookies, walking along the lake, walking through the forest…
Sounds idyllic to me!
love,
Janice
p.s. Ten years ago, I was reading a color theory book I bought in Paris, and trying to create Accessory Families in these colors. If nothing else, the names of the colors are amusing!

I love that you had such a clear vision for this heroine. I love the idea of the heroine having a special getaway spot in which she can relax and reflect. The artist’s work depicted here looks a great deal like Maine to me. I could drive just a few minutes and see scenes just like this. It’s soft and nostalgic. I do find gazing at the painting to be peaceful.
To be honest, this isn’t my favorite color palette. It just feels ‘sad’ to me…I know the goal was to help our heroine find pieces that would all go together, have timeless appeal and make getting dressed simple during her rural sojourn. But, it just feels as if our heroine is grieving or just is generally unhappy. This isn’t a wardrobe that provokes joy in me…but lethargy and unhappiness.
Now…your look back at colorful accessory families? Love, love, love. These are magnificent and just as chic today as they were 10 years ago.
So interesting, our different responses to colors! I also really like the painting, and found the wardrobe to be very peaceful – I envision a delicate-boned, calm lady wafting around seaside towns, possibly with a sketchbook in hand. (Not me – I’d get it dirty in seconds! That farm is a nice Airbnb she’s staying in.)
I love sage green and in fact just bought a dress in that color to wear to a fall wedding in New Orleans. The color transitions to almost every season so easily with the right accessories.
The sage, esp the striped pieces read as very grey leaning to me, and I don’t think they go well with the creaminess of the beige. I wonder if I would like this more in person v on a screen
My colors never seem the same as what’s on the retailer websites. It’s always wise to check with them directly!
And I’m waiting for a university graduation to begin, in Boston. It’s freezing cold and anyone wearing a skirt will feel it.
Love,
Janice
I guess we all see colours slightly differently, especially via screens. I love this peaceful sscene and colour combination, which is very much like my own olive green & cream neutrals – although I add in denim blue of course (which can be justified here from the touch of blue sky, as could a very light ochre). I’m not sure I have the discipline for just two colours though :-)
I want to live there … with that entire wardrobe! Beautiful.
This would be a lovely wardrobe with someone who has soft colouring. I could certainly use the beige core for my summer wardrobe😉, very versatile for a lot of different accent colours.
Looking at this. I realize I have this, for the most part. I even have the dress as someone mentioned. I’ve bought green and light beige wide leg linen pants the past couple years to wear instead of shorts when I’m out about in the 100 degree summer. This summer I need new Tshirts and this gives me ideas. I do not have a light neutral T as I prefer brights, but I’ll be looking for one now.
Recently I did some closet shopping and found a pair of chinos and some sweatpants from last year’s Lands End in their sage color. Looking at my screen, I’d say the Lands End product is not as grey and a little more saturated than the Bean, FWIW. Well I have to say the color is way more useful than I expected! Most of my clothes are navy, grey and shades of blue and I wanted Something different for spring. The sage blends right in. I don’t favor having lots of colors in my wardrobe. I prefer everything to work together without too much effort on my part. This green will work all summer. I like it so much I ordered a tank top and a stripedy tee!
Also love this artist’s work. Totally new to me. Thank you!
This painting reminds me so much of downstate Illinois between Will County and Champaign County. I traveled that route often as a young woman. The farmhouses and barns/garages looked so similar. As for the wardrobe, I would change the colors to white and a light blue. I think those colors would appear serene in a different way.
I just googled the artist’s autumn and winter paintings This would be fun to see in all four seasons. Thanks for introducing another painter to us.
Great painting!
I would combine it with a darker green.
And Freitag’s pink with a touch of blue.
So pretty! 🤩
I’m now looking for those earrings.
Love this colour palette. I’d happily wear it all summer. I feel it’s both soothing and energising.
I love the restfulness of this image. I can see her developing this wardrobe with the darker green of the trees, the mid-green of the grass, perhaps a light brown and pale blue/light denim.
I love the look back. So many lovely colours.
I don’t envy you shivering at your graduation. We’ve had some warm sunny weather in the UK but it’s now reverted back to damp and cool.
I have seen a variety of templates used as a basis for travel capsules, but I am having difficulty locating these. One I especially liked had bottom, top, top, cover. Others had additional tops. I am planning for two trips: first to Britanny and Paris in late May-June, another to Florida in June to care for a friend following surgery. Does anyone have a suggestion for easily locating some of the templates that could be useful? Thank you.
I love these light, slightly cool-toned colors. I could happily live with this capsule.
