Some of us do have signature accent colors – you’re not surprised to know that mine is purple. It’s not that I wear purple clothes all that often, but I have purple highlights in my hair. That pretty much wraps up the whole signature color for me! But I do wear purple clothes occasionally, and I just ordered a purple backpack!
Today’s heroine doesn’t have a “lifetime signature” but she is planning to stick with shades of coral for the upcoming warm weather. Her inspiration is this:
Our heroine plans to use this as her color palette:
Her goals are two. First, she wants to establish a 9-piece wardrobe in these two colors, which would mean that any weekend she’s going away, she will pack 6 or 7 garments and wear 2 or 3 pieces. Yes, she’s taking the same stuff with her every weekend that she travels!
Secondly, she wants to inject just a hint of dressiness or femininity into her look. Not ruffles nor frills, and not a bunch of big blowsy flowers. But gold accessories, and pretty jewelry…
Her beige cluster is this – yes, she opted for a white tee shirt rather than beige, to break up the colors a bit without injecting a totally different feeling:
Shirt – J.Crew; earrings – Charlotte’s Web Jewellery; tee shirt – J.Crew; cardigan – J.Jill; pants – J.Crew; necklace – A Weathered Penny; bracelets – Saachi; tote bag – L.L.Bean; shorts – J.Crew; sandals – Sam Edelman
The beige is elegant and infinitely versatile, but when you add in her accent color, everything springs to life!
Earrings – The Met Store; necklace – The Met Store; sweater – L.L.Bean; scarf – J.McLaughlin; gingham shirt – Lands’ End; tunic – Lands’ End; bag – Michael Kors; pants – L.L.Bean; flats – Jeffrey Campbell
Everything – assembled together – looks coherent, versatile, and warmly pretty!
And – as we can all see – she won’t struggle to get dressed! I suspect that this is a “whatever’s clean” wardrobe, in that it’s not possible to assemble an ugly outfit from these things.
Our heroine wears uniforms during her work week (which are laundered by her employer!), so she really won’t need to have a lot of summer clothes.
If you could only have one neutral and one accent for a week, or two, or three, what would you choose?
Me? Black and white! Yes, white isn’t really an accent…
love,
Janice
p.s. Ten years ago, we combined two capsule wardrobes into one 18-piece wardrobe. If you stick with consistent neutral colors, this is a snap!

I admit that when I first looked at this painting that it was a stylised depiction of the muscles of the human shoulder joint. Then I saw the birds! I wasn’t wearing my glasses at that point…
Anyway, I love this colour pink. It’s the nearest I get to coral. The dark pink adds depth. Though my neutral would be silver grey with an ivory tee-shirt. I’d also add a pair of lace-ups that I could walk in. My accessories would be pink and grey. If I wanted to extend it, then ocean blue and pale blue would look nice.
Now that you mentioned seeing the muscular system, I can’t unsee it.
That was the first thing I saw too, Beth! Retired RN here, lol.
Beth,
Me too on first seeing muscular structure— also a retired RN ! Funny how our brains have automatic paradigms !
This is lovely!
My neutral would be denim or soft grey with shades of blue. I’ll have to add a bit of pink or sage green too. One accent will not be enough. Silver jewellery will be added and comfortable shoes.
If I had just two colours… burgundy and ivory would last me a few weeks, at least. Certainly if I had a shopping budget as I’m replacing some clothes with burgundy ones as they wear out.
I have done sage/soft green and ivory before for 6 weeks, although there was a little peach in one T shirt and some jewellery.
Thinking through this and favourites from previous years, ivory/light beige is definitely a key neutral for me. Isn’t it fun to still discover things? Thank you for making me think, Janice.
This is absolutely great! Usually, I’m not a fan of the two color palettes because they’re too limiting. However, this just works…probably because the coral has a much bigger range to it.
That being said, as a woman of a certain age (and one with thighs), I try to steer clear of shorts. It’s not that I’m ashamed. This body has given me two great children and fought cancer twice. It helps me live the life I love and holds me upright. But, I still feel uncomfortable in shorts that are short…not even as far as “Daisy Dukes”, but the 3″ shown here are just too short for me. I’d opt for subbing in a tan linen skirt in its place. That would also give our heroine a dressier look when paired with a top and the scarf.
I love much you love purple. I feel that way about red (in winter) and coral (in summer). It’s lovely to have a color that just feeds your soul, isn’t it?
Glorious! Inspirational! Especially those pants. If they were available in my size I’d buy them. And be so happy every time I wore them. Thank you.
Very pretty.
I would normally just wear sage green with it. But since you asked, I’ll go with sage and cream (and a darker shade).
I’ve found a surprising number of patterned pieces in those two colors… and a lot of secondhand stuff, too.
Oh my gosh I want it all! Besides blue jeans I would add sage, warm tan, maybe warm brown.
Karen,
Sounds like my colors too !
If all my clothing came out of the wash suddenly transformed into these colors, I wouldn’t be mad. So pretty!
For summer? Inky navy & pale blue-greens, with whiskey or metallic bronze leathergoods, although I suspect some black & coral would try hard to sneak in…
Nice backpack! I bet you’ll get lots of use out of that.
If I could only wear two colours, it would be black and red in the winter and white/red in the summer.
Box it up and send to me please. In love with this. Would go perfectly with my turquoise as well.
Janice,
Beige as my Summer neutral, but I can’t do just one accent color. I always like both a warm and a cooler colored one. So for this post, it might be peach or soft mandarin orange or coral, and a sage green or an aqua . Cooler months bring browns as my neutral with accents of rust or burgundy, and teal or moss green . Yellows fits into both seasons . Denim blue color is my year round color . Can’t help being the magpie that I am !
I must add that I live in a rural setting, with colors changing with the seasons in my environment, and I like to reflect those colors somewhat in my attire at those times. If going to the beach, it’s tan ( sand) , ivory, aqua, and coral. Autumn is leaf colors time , etc..
Oh and accent colors only go on the top half of my body. Bottoms are neutrals only , as most of my weight resides there !
Hhm, I would choose army green and rust. I think of army green as a neutral. I would also want dark denim. So maybe navy and army green?
The range of coral colors from light to deep tones is where the magic in this capsule comes from as I see it. I am not much of a beige wearer, so I would substitute chambray/denim/navy as the neutral (and keep the white T). I hope to never be forced into a 2 color capsule, but my version of this would be a serious contender for a summer one. If I could reach one to add just one more color, I think a soft olive/sage green would make me pretty happy…says the person who thinks the Mountain View color palette from the Six Paintings series in 2021 (?) remains the Greatest of All Time.
Robin’s egg blue, cadet blue, and dusty teal are the shades I reach for the most, but really I love almost any variation of blue-green. “True” neutrals for me are navy and cool brown, but I wear so much blue-green it’s effectively a third neutral in my wardrobe.
About 90% of my summer clothes are navy or cadet blue (https://www.colorhexa.com/5f9ea0). Makes getting dressed a breeze.
Thanks for your link to colorhexa. It’s really interesting to see the relationships between colours ( we use the British spelling).
My grandson called me orange meema. Deep shades of orange are my favorites, with neutral greens. I had an interesting experience shopping this week. I was wearing a lightweight deep coral rain jacket. I saw quite a few coral tops and went to look more closely. However, they were all a light bright pinky coral that made my jacket look heavy dark and autumnal. So interesting as I bought the jacket in spring a few years ago.
I love this artwork and the collection of clothing.
i like the 9-piece wardrobe idea, seems so easy to pack
I have loved blue-green (teal) since my first box of 64 Crayola crayons in second grade. Finally at around 50 years old, I went all-in. I’ve finally embraced my love of teal in my home and wardrobe, and I couldn’t be more pleased.
