March 2026 – Building a Wardrobe Based on Ruffled Autumn Clouds by Emile Nolde

March 4, 2026

Give me your honest opinion: is there white in this painting – in the yellow areas? This heroine could use some white at some stage – especially when the weather heats up!

This is our ambitious heroine’s wardrobe color palette – perfect for fitting in AND standing out, all at the same time:

At the end of February, our heroine had assembled a 12-piece wardrobe that wasn’t foolproof (mixing her accent colors might get weird!), but that’s very versatile. One thing that she discovered is that she really likes getting a shirt AND a sweater AND a tee shirt in the same color, if possible.

So when March rolls around, she spies the yellow sweater and knows that this month, yellow is the accent color. She already has enough green to get her through any Irish festivities…

She almost bought a yellow button-front shirt, but she then realized that grabbing matching navy linen pants and the shirt would be smart. Yellow shirts will be around for a while; finding linen just the way you like it won’t be!

Earrings – Anthropologie; silk scarf – Jessie Zhao New York; acacia cashmere sweater – Alex Mill; pale sunbeam tee – Lands’ End; navy linen shirt – Eileen Fisher; navy linen pants – Eileen Fisher; ballet flats – Sam Edelman

Her template is filling up perfectly! This doesn’t usually happen…

And this heroine is very cleverly pulling together a smashing assortment of scarves! She has already realized that what you wear above the waist – what your bosses can see on a teleconference – is important.

How is she going to wear her four new garments?

Of course, next fall she could certain buy a second navy shirt, in silk. And she could have one in cotton for all-season wear…

love,
Janice

earlier posts where you can see the earlier items in her wardrobe can be found here:  Christmas Eve Preview, January, February

p.s. Ten years ago, we were building one garment at a time, in the palette lime, coral, beige and cream. It’s very spring-like!

So beautifully done, but again, it’s Janice! This is my favorite, and yes, I see white or ivory in the painting and yes, it would be useful for our heroine too. I love the classic white/ivory (or stripes) top- navy pants or skirt combo. This would also help lighten the wardrobe a bit. OOTD is navy pants and sneakers with ivory tee and light turquoise merino cardigan, so thanks for the inspiration!
Blessings to all, we need as much kind words as possible these days…!

My opinion on the white is. Yes. For white shorts or crops or a skirt in warm weather. Navy is my neutral and it gets a bit heavy long about June ! Plus all the white linen that will be available! Fabulous scarves, by the way…

Yes, I think there is some white above the pink skyline layer, and some very pale lemon/ivory in the clouds. I know navy is useful, especially for professional days, but I’d be inclined to use both the navy and the green as the base colours. Enjoying this whole series as usual :-)

This wardrobe is so beautiful. Yes, it goes well with white or ivory.
Although I would prefer more green,
    …like in the painting.

I see white or ivory in the painting and I feel like this heroine could use some, especially in the warmer months. The scarves are fantastic! Loving this particular wardrobe already.

One of the paintings I was most looking forward to! I am enjoying watching you flesh this one out, as it has so much variation. This is one of those paintings that I wish was a scarf! I believe that would be a standout!

I can totally envision this with white….and I do see bits of it there. This heroine needs a white tee for certain and maybe a nice white blouse? Beyond that, what about a white cardigan, white jeans and white sneakers? I wouldn’t wear them all together, but imagine how many outfits she could gain from those additions!

I love this wardrobe. I think it may be my favorite. I, too, see white in the yellow. Go for it!

I see white and ivory in the painting. There is also much more green than navy in
the painting. Really enjoying seeing this one come together

I see ivory. Those clouds are reflecting sunlight after all.
The Jesse Zhao scarf is glorious. Our heroine is on the right track with scarves. I’m a retired tv news anchor- still have an impressive scarf collection. On days when I didn’t have to leave the station, I would often have on jeans and western boots below the anchor desk, 😁
I can see our heroine mixing her accents— even the pink and yellow. Yellow Sun dress, pink sandals, bracelet, earrings. Or a pink & yellow scarf. Green and blue are practically neutrals! My rule is always push your palette because you may be surprised!

No, not white but I do see ivory and cream. Some of us can’t wear pure white (too cool) and any white on the blue end of the spectrum so warmer shades of ivory and cream etc. are really appreciated!

There’s definitely white or ivory peeking between the yellow clouds and near some pink ones two. I hope this heroine will treat herself to a couple of summery patterned skirts and a dress that include pink and/or white and/or yellow.

Im following this wardrobe closely as it’s navy-based with several accent colours….my wheelhouse!

Do you have a blank of this template? It is not in the group I purchased. I would love to use it.

Yes, I definitely see white sprinkled throughout the painting, especially in the pink and yellow. I agree with others that white and navy are particularly useful together, especially in the warmer months.

I see a bit of white here and there, but not enough to change the color wheel of this wardrobe drastically. I appreciate a wardrobe that doesn’t include white or black as I seldom wear either (I live in a European city and rely on public transit and it’s too hot in the summer here for black, even if it’s linen).

It’s funny how one painting can lend so many colors! I really could use this painting for my current wardrobe but the colors that I have pulled out are navy, a medium denim, creamy white (just a little), the more gold/cognac color, a richer berry pink, greens (in a few shades), teal and black from the very top. I love it!! Which means even with the same painting my wardrobe looks completely different. :)

That’s SO MUCH the way I picture these things – everyone gets their own interpretation! I share mine, and you can figure out what you do and don’t like…

Same here! My colors focus is on a piece to the right of the clump (of trees?) in the lower center. So far, I have bits of red and pink in my primarily light navy/chambray wardrobe. Since yellow does me no favors, I am seeing a little lavender that I think will fit nicely with what I have.

I see glimmers of white streaked among the yellow and pink, especially. Navy and white is a classic combination that would provide more stability to this wardrobe.

I really love this painting — and wardrobe for its moody drama and yet hopeful tone. And even though I can’t wear yellow (I look ill when wearing it), I love this wardrobe for all the accent colors and saturated hues.

Rigid. I have come to the conclusion that buying things because they slot into a template is too rigid for me. I have ended up with pieces that are fine, but they don’t spark joy.

I see a little bit of white, and every wardrobe needs a perfect white tee and button down.

It’s so interesting that we all think so differently! I love how this wardrobe fits into a template. I dressed much like this is college. I had sets of sweaters, button downs, tees and pants that would have fit into this template. I could interchange pieces between the different templates and it worked wonderfully. I am enjoying thinking of my wardrobe in this way again! On the other hand, every time I have bought a perfect white button down because everyone needs one, it has been donated.
I am following “Ruffled Autumn Clouds” with some color tweaks. It has been making me stretch my imagination and creativity.

I love my colours but even I have a smattering of white/ivory. Yes they are there – sunlight behind the clouds. Even when it’s cloudy, the sun is still shining. I agree with ‘ak’ that green and navy could be regarded as neutrals. The scarves are pretty and amazing.

I see a range of whites in the sky, from true white to ivory. You could certainly introduce white.

I’ve found that I don’t wear any light neutrals at all; it’s all mid-tones and darker for me. Even the one soft white blouse I bought to wear under sweaters just doesn’t really work for me.

So I’d be fine with this wardrobe sticking with just the existing colors too. You could absolutely build out enough clothes in any one of those accent colors for it to serve as a neutral. I certainly own enough teal that it acts as a neutral in my wardrobe, along with navy and brown.

Sans the yellow (not my color) this is basically how I dress. So yes, I’d add white or ivory in the summer. Slight preference to the ivory but I know a lot of people associate bright white with summer. I find ivory more flattering, personally. I don’t think you could go wrong with a blue and white print in this wardrobe.
