Ready to Start Thinking Spring? Start With Art – Book Illustration by Goyo Hashiguchi

February 16, 2026

It’s not quite spring here, although I hear from some of you that flowers are starting to show?!?!?

But it IS the second half of February, which, for the forward-thinking and wise heroine, means starting to look for clothes for warmer weather. The best things sell quickly, especially if you wear a common size…

Our heroine was here last summer…

First, and always most important, let’s pause for just a second and appreciate this:

Our heroine has chosen these colors for her wardrobe; it might seem limited, but there’s a lot of possibilities if one is patient and focused. We all might want to focus and develop a more signature, personally authentic style…

We’re going to start our heroine’s Spring wardrobe with these items. Honestly, these were chosen because they’re still available! In reality I would assume that any person would keep just about everything except massive heavy sweaters in rotation through the brief warming season…

Bay leaf sweater – L.L.Bean; ivory bag – Cole-Haan; tee shirt – Lands’ End; nylon bag – Longchamp; boots – Spring Step; brown loafers – J.Crew; thyme pants – L.L.Bean; heritage stone chinos – L.L.Bean

Our heroine has decided that she would array her Spring wardrobe in a 4×4 Template. There are a number of ways that she could have chosen to organize her thinking and shopping, but she’s going this route:

Heroines at The Vivienne Files are generally pretty practical, and this lovely woman is no exception. Her first spring additions are much more about bringing color to her wardrobe than finding items for warm weather. For many of us, Spring can be cold, cool, warm, or downright hot!

Scarf – Emily Carter; striped shirt – Lands’ End; earrings – Luv AJ; striped tee shirt – Lands’ End; rich ginger brown pants – Lands’ End; socks – Stems; cardigan – Alex Mill

At this point, her template looks as if she wasn’t paying any attention!

The second phase of wardrobe additions includes more summery things – it’s not at all crazy to buy sandals now! I just ordered a pair, before they’re out of stock in my size…

And a cotton bandana is always a perky. inexpensive lift to one’s wardrobe:

Floral top – Wit & Wisdom; cotton bandana – Faherty; tee – Lands’ End; skirt – GAP Factory; bracelet – Miss Cecelia; blood orange dress – Eileen Fisher; sandals – Easy Spirit

Now her template is beginning to fall into place a bit more…

Phase 3 of Spring is pretty synonymous with Phase 1 of Summer, I’d say! A cozy cardigan might have been included earlier, but there’s no reason not to grab a classic workhorse any time you see it.

Scarf – Artifact.; earrings – Alegoria Jewellery; dress – Lands’ End; sage striped wrap top – Lands’ End; cardigan – L.L.Bean; flats – Coach; linen shorts – Banana Republic

Now, her template is delightful!

The clothing within the template makes clear all kinds of possibilities; when you add in the accessories, it begins to look like a real wardrobe for a real woman!

Possibilities? Seriously? One could make their way through late February, all of March, and all of April with very little struggle. Here are but a few thoughts:

I’m quite smitten with this yellow cardigan – should I pair it with navy?

love,
Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, our wardrobe inspiration was a photograph of a cardinal. The bird, that is… Black, white, red, and shades of grey is NEVER a bad wardrobe palette!

This is just beautiful. I have to admit, when this illustration came around the first time, I was not a fan. I just don’t like all white (or ivory) wardrobes and this one seemed very heavy in that area. But, you have transformed into something much deeper and more practical. My favorite pieces are the rust colored pants, the red and yellow bohemian blouse and the Eileen Fisher dress. You also knocked it out of the park with your accessory choices and shoes. Well done!

I am definitely looking forward to spring, although the snowfall yesterday here in Norfolk makes it seem a little way off yet!
And I increasingly enjoy this illustration. Does anyone know what the Japanese characters say?
This heroine’s wardrobe has also really grown on me, although I wonder how easy the gorgeous ginger brown would be to match with other items in the future, although Land’s End seem to have a lot of it at the moment. I’d be inclined to swap it for denim blue – such a great standby which is still faithful to the painting – and/or a touch of berry red (the stems of the blue flowers?) probably instead of the yellow, which, albeit tempting, is entirely absent from my own closet.
Thanks again for the inspiration, Janice :-)

The first two characters are “sa” and “shi” — but the last one is a little confusing. It appears to me to be a “we,” but that is a rarely used hiragana and I couldn’t find any words in my Japanese dictionary that were spelled “sashiwe.” However, if it is a stylized “e” then the word would be “sashie” which means illustration or picture.

Even though I can’t give you a definitive answer, I hope that helps!

Another beautiful wardrobe. Although the cherry trees (some of them) are just starting to blossom, we are expecting snow. I’m glad when I packed the bins I’m living out of that I kept my sweaters!

I’ve been wondering how it’s going living out of the bins instead of your closet, Sheila :)

Great wardrobe! I love all the yellow pieces. And, the colors blend so beautifully. Not what I would have picked, but you made it work. You are the expert with color and coordination. Navy and yellow would be fantastic!

This would be suitable for spring where I live. Our spring is cold and I’m keeping an eye out for sweaters in light, bright colours because by the time April comes around, I am sick of wearing black, red and hunter green.

This is beautiful! Though I could not wear these colors, I sure do admire this wardrobe and the heroine who can pull it off! Yellow with navy does not work for me, but I am sure there are those who would benefit from you working your magic with that combination.

How about red jeans/chinos for your trip to the UK ? Love this whole wardrobe though maybe more dressy than I’m used to

This wardrobe works for me. Other colors you could pull from this painting include the medium blue (denim), coral and black, all of which still work for me. I love this time of year because clothes in “my” colors are more readily available.

And the throwback palettes based on the different colorings of male and female cardinals are also good for me.

The 4×4 template is such a workhorse. You can easily use it to create a capsule wardrobe with items you already have for various purposes. Maybe assemble different capsules to see what is missing for more targeted shopping.

    Such a lovely wardrobe!
I’m one of those people who look good in these colors and I already have most of them in my closet. I also like to wear blue pants/a shirt and a denim jacket with it.
Today, in the snowstorm, I wore olive-colored pants with a red jacket.

Just beware if you are looking at the LE side wrap top. I have two, one is a pretty slub cotton coral that I loved so much I purchased a blue/white stripe top (similar to the one shown) last year. Sadly it’s made of a cheesy jersey knit that is uncomfortable and unflattering so probably will donate. I’m a long time fan of LE and own many of their pieces. Lately the fabric and construction has dropped and this spring the colour choices are unbelievably drab and boring giving a ‘life on the collective farm’ vibe. Some things are ok and they are still my go to for swim wear but still not the same quality as years before.
I haven’t forgiven them not including a cashmere hoodie this year in the fall collection;)
