The Impact of a New Accent Color: Start With Art – In Northern Mists by Erik Werenskiold

January 28, 2026

Monday’s very pink wardrobe was a success – except there was cloud cover the ENTIRE weekend she was with her friend.

So they’re going to try again…

Remember, this is the illustration upon which we’re basing all of this week’s travel capsule wardrobes:

Our heroine has a denim-focused wardrobe, with three pastel accent colors:

They’re trying to encourage clearer skies, so our heroine is focusing on yellow, and sunny earrings!

silk scarf – Lost Pattern NYC; sunburst earrings – Milou Jewelry; pale sunbeam yellow vest – Lands’ End; chambray shirt – L.L.Bean; jeans – Levi’s; weekender bag – Mark & Graham; sneakers – Børn

As a reminder, this is the Six-Pack Plan that she’s going to try to select for her second weekend with her new friend:

She’s not trying to convince her friend that she has an endlessly large wardrobe, so she packs a lot of the same clothing as before. People who truly like you don’t CARE if you wear something more than once…

tee shirt – Lands’ End; sun earrings – Lele Sadoughi; denim jacket – Levi’s; corduroy pants – L.L.Bean; handbag – Mansur Gavriel; loafers – Marc Fisher LTD

She’s definitely taking her skirt again – dinner out together proved to be a smashing success:

pale sunbeam shirt – Lands’ End; sun earrings- The Met Store; scarf – Squaïr; denim skirt – Lands’ End; cardigan – COS; ballet flats – Camper

With all three outfits chosen, this is her weekend wardrobe:

And did she manage to fulfill the mythical “requirements” of her Six-Pack Plan?

The comfort that comes from knowing that you have options for how you’re going to dress is worth a lot…

While this yellow isn’t a color that all of us can wear, it’s certainly cheerful on cold days! Maybe it will bring sunshine…

love,

Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, we started with a bright Marimekko bag to assemble a wardrobe in black and white with bright red, pink and coral accents…

I like how fresh these posts look, waiting for Spring we are! Since is still cold, all I can think is that my feet would freeze with those flats and ballerinas 🤣. But, as you always say, one day it’ll warm up again! I almost have no yellow clothes, but this shade is very pretty, I like it with light to medium blue, navy and white/cream.
Hugs to everyone and prayers for kindness and loving the ones around us to be again in the top of everyone’s list.

That shade of yellow is also very pretty with grey.

Every time you post yellow accent colors, I wish I could wear it. I do own one yellow dress, but it has a lot of print in it with my ‘good’ colors. Yellow is such a happy color and just brings a sense of freshness and joy.

Also, on a personal note, thank you for including a puffer vest. As a vest wearer myself, I love the ease that these garments bring, without the bulk of a full coat. On the coldest days, I’ll wear a big coat over, but puffers add a pop of color, while still giving warmth.

I agree with everything you said about yellow! Except that I do NOT have any yellow clothing, it’s just not my color for clothes. I stamp greeting cards and I use yellow there every chance I get. I currently don’t have any puffer vests, but I love my fleece vests. I actually don’t mind winter that much (well, as long as I don’t have to leave the house too often!) because long sleeve Land’s End tees and a fleece vest are SO comfortable.

So tempting to chuck my wardrobe and start over with denim and pastels. But that would be ridiculous, so maybe the jeans and denim shirt to lighten things up for spring. 100% cotton denim…score!

I think this is my favorite shade of yellow – cool and light. What would you call it? Lemon or butter yellow?

When looking for clothes, try both. But in my head, it’s butter. Softened by the whiteness of the wee milk-fat cells…

The only thing I don’t really understand: why pack so many pairs of shoes? If it were me, I’d wear one, and pack one, at the most.

A normal person wouldn’t take so many shoes, but I think the various outfits look better if I include them! Sometimes, my heroines must suffer for my art…
      laughing hugs,

This wardrobe is soft and crisp at the same time, would easily work for those with Spring (moi) or Summer coloring. The other day I wore a butter-colored turtleneck sweater and that color against my pale face made me look like I had a tan! Neon colors in pink, orange, yellow and green have the same effect on my warm skin tones. It’s amazing what the right colors can do for you.

A pair of blue shoes in one style could eliminate the need for extra pairs of that type in each accent color.

True! the practical in me demands less shoes. The joy in me loves seeing all the options. (I may have a shoe obsession). Luckily, when given options, we can choose!! (not saying I would choose ANOTHER pair of shoes, in blue, to keep adding options…. or am I…)

That butter yellow really can act as a neutral. It’s beautiful. I love both scarves you found. Lovely.

My favorite part so far is how all the “neutral” denim pieces are the same between the 2 posts (and i hope stay the same/mostly the same for the third!) This becomes a very practical guide on how to have multiple accent colors in your every-day wardrobe without going overboard. The whole vibe is so .. cheerful!
