This painting feels like an October evening to me…
For no good reason she can pinpoint, this heroine plunged headfirst into a feast of green! She was particularly thrilled to find her lime green cotton crewneck sweater, since she’s loved her cardigan in this color… And her cardigan jacket matches her new pants – a suit is never a bad idea!

Bag – The Sak; lime cotton sweater – Lands’ End; forest moss cardigan jacket – Lands’ End; pants – Lands’ End; scarf – Artifact.; ballet flats – Sarto by Franco Sarto; lace-insert sweater dress – Boden
Here’s another Weekly Timeless Wardrobe that’s gone somewhat off the rails – not that it matters! No rules, and the most important thing in any wardrobe is that we have what we need, and what makes us happy to wear.
This month, I moved the five truly orange garments onto the same page with the gold and white pieces. It looks good!
I’ve always pictured this heroine with green eyes, which is what gives her the freedom to wear all kinds of shades of green. She can even mix her greens in the same outfit! Is that dressing like a salad?
I’m not even going to say how much I like this heroine’s scarves…
Her shoes are pretty snappy too! Anyone with gold, lime green AND orange shoes has a strong personal style, I’d say!
As is true for all of our heroines, getting dressed with new clothes is pretty simple! If you’ve got 44 garments in your closet and you STILL struggle to get dressed, something needs to be reconsidered, eh?
I’ll be honest – this is the ONE wardrobe that year that I really can’t picture myself wearing! If I went out of my apartment wearing lime green, someone would call an ambulance before I made it to the lobby…
love,
Janice

That knit dress is lovely…and so different in today’s market. Great find, Janice!
Every time this painting comes around, I feel bereft that olive looks so awful on me. I am just drawn by the warmth and earthiness of this shade of green. I do love all of the clothes you’ve picked and I am completely obsessed with the richness and vibrancy of this painting. I particularly love the way the way the lights are reflected here, as well as the pops of mustard and coral. It is just a gorgeous piece.
I was browsing on April Cornell (today’s Laura Ashley of yesteryear) and saw this beautiful dress that would fit right in. It’s an olive dress with highlights of the coral embroidered and would fit in very naturally. Unfortunately, AC doesn’t show their clothing as a stand alone photograph, as it is only featured on models. However, the quality is excellent. https://www.aprilcornell.com/product/Botanist-Dress-Olive-Green-DRA5076X-OliveGreen
I have a lovely April Cornell dress in my closet that must be 30 years old and it gets worn at least once every summer. Seeing your post made me go to the website, which I haven’t visited for years, and reminisce about my more boho days.
Beautiful!
I’ll take all the new arrivals, please. 🤩
I’ve been looking for an olive dress for a long time.
I would pair this green with yesterday’s outfit (with dark blue).
It’s so nice to see these capsules individually.
I’d love to see more orange in this wardrobe to balance the green and gold. The orange sky is so striking.
I agree! Orange is my favorite color, which I realize is pretty unusual. However, it’s super flattering on most people and does not have to look “Halloweeny”.
Gosh, when you see all the clothing together like that the amount of color is just staggering. Makes me wonder what my closet would look like all laid out. I don’t know that I could do the yellow tones, but I’d certainly give the orange and the green a try! I have shades of both in my closet as it is. I just love this.
Pack it all up & ship it right over, will you? I’m a hazel eyed strawberry blonde & “salad dressing” suits me down to the ground. Although now I’m going to laugh every time I do it!. Ranch or Thousand Island? 🤣
I love this wardrobe! The colors, the style… and I look good in olive :) Although I dont wear it enough. But its still too much olive for me; to personalize it further, I would turn half the olive into navy – which puts us into the “starting from scratch” wardrobe color styles of : navy and green(olive through lime) neutrals; sliver of white; and mustard/gold through orange/coral. Perfect!
Amazing job as always Janice. The accessories page and color diversity is apparently my “quick read” on whether this would be a good fit for me – and it just SINGS to me!!
Ahh I miss those big starting from scratch wardrobes! I should go back and reread them. They are some of my favorites.
I think I should go back and read the Starting from Scratch posts too!
I’ve finally figured out my preferred color scheme consists of five neutrals. How much work would it be to empty my closet and then refill it piece by piece following the Starting from Scratch posts? I probably already have most of what I need to start building my ideal, quality, year round, wardrobe. Any gaps would be obvious and easy to shop for. And having breathing room in my closet, ah – how nice that would be!
Hmm… this sounds like a worthwhile project / New Year’s resolution idea that I can actually accomplish.
I love the greens. I would add a dark brown or navy.
Those accessories, especially the scarfs are just gorgeous. Another great wardrobe!
The accessories really make this wardrobe, I especially love the poppies scarf.
The lime green and mustard yellow colors are not flattering for many, including me. So I would swap them for aqua and clear yellow as per the painting. But olive totally works as one of my neutrals.
Our wise heroines realize they might not find everything on the spread sheet. They’ll adjust as they go. Some years, the colors, patterns and styles just don’t fit your preferences.
So far, these capsules are absolutely beautiful.
I love this one too. A question about the beautiful dress with ankle boots though. Doesn’t the flash of lower calf between dress and boot look a little odd? Thoughts?
I don’t think so, but then I’ve been pairing skirts with ankle boots or ankle socks forever lol. So long as the boots or socks harmonize well with the skirt it’s all good.
As a textbook autumn in coloring I’m totally here for ‘salad-core.’ you say ‘olive’ and I say ‘sage.’ I’d make sage green my neutral if I could find enough basics in that scrumptious color. I was envious of the botanical and floral scarves until I realized that while I don’t have those exact ones I do have many that are quite similar.
Yes to it all! I refer to this (for me) as forest rather than salad, simply because I also have a lot of brown. I am glad that olive items have been having a moment in the stores because it was difficult to find a few years ago. I need to think about adding more orange. My red hair, now changing slowly to neon white, was very bright as a child so I avoided orange at all costs . I guess most of me is mellowing with age. Cheers! Chris in FL
Love this color palette! It complements my pale skin & red hair. Thanks for the vibrant autumn colors.
I have never thought of dressing in all greens as akin to dressing as a salad … though I do occasionally wear green head to toe and I don’t worry too much if they all go together exactly because I am dressed like a forest or a foliage garden and at the end of the hardly anyone ever complains that the trees aren’t matching each other.
