October 2025 Six Paintings – 12 Months #5: Pines by the Sea by Bertha Lum

October 7, 2025

Three REALLY easy neutrals (brown, denim and white) paired with teal, which is an accent that lots of us seem to love!

Could you keep the three neutrals and replace the teal with… pink? or peach? I’m sure there are other accents that would be perfect with the three neutrals. Hmm…

If’s finally getting cool where THIS heroine lives, so she was happy to grab a couple of turtlenecks and a warm dress!

bayside blue turtleneck – L.L.Bean; light toffee turtleneck – Lands’ End; corduroy dress – Boden; bag – Aimee; silk scarf – Artifact.; denim skirt – L.L.Bean; cognac boots – Comfortive

This heroine is keeping up – somewhat – with her Weekly Timeless Wardrobe. As with so many other among our friends and their wardrobes, this one is going to fall short when we get to the winter holidays. But there are no rules…

This wardrobe is relatively well balanced; when it comes to putting outfits together, this wardrobe is by far the easiest! I think it’s partly because all of her neutrals are colors that can be blended, rather than perfectly matched. Nobody expects your denim shirt to match your jeans!

I could be tempted by this wardrobe if only to have all of these scarves! And the jewelry, fwiw…

I find brown shoes – leather, of course – to be tremendously appealing. I wonder why…

As I said, this wardrobe is so easy to wear – all of our heroine’s new clothes go with everything she already owns! Getting everything to coordinate is nearly impossible, and isn’t a realistic goal. But having everything at least feel like they’re part of the same family is realistic…

I must spend more times thinking about three neutrals with one accent…

love,

Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, I was on vacation, but I posted links to a few older items that explored how one chooses a scarf…

I love this wardrobe. I also love the pieces you’ve picked for this month’s additions. I’d need a much more vibrant shade of teal, rather than this soft one, but this is just such a practical, pretty group of clothing. I find this to be the most cohesive without being boring or monotonous. I especially love the corduroy dress, denim skirt and lace up boots. I’d buy the boots in a heartbeat if they came in my size. Companies just don’t make size 5.5 like they used to!

I’m intrigued by your idea of swapping out the teal for another color completely, such as pink and/or coral. I actually think I could recreate this very wardrobe if I made that adjustment, which is an interesting prospect.

I’m already think about 2026 and what paintings you might choose. This year’s tones have tended to be quite soft and muted, which are beautiful for so many women. However, I truly thrive in more vibrant hues. Is there any way to make a request for just one brighter painting next year? Pretty please?

Wasn’t this heroine inspired by the Nash last year?!

Now you can put together the best of both wardrobes.
I particularly like the scarf here again and how well the individual colors work together. I could also imagine a different color besides the teal.

Hmm… I think she just needs a polished-looking camel skirt, a slightly fancier pair of earrings & a pretty little clutch (perhaps gold?) to give her options for a dressier “holiday” look. That gets her a camel column or “suit” that would work with a lot here…. She could already go all white with her teal scarf, but she doesn’t strike me as that sort. Ooh, and maybe some shiny/mildly metallic nailpolish. My $.02!

Oh gosh I love this wardrobe. I really do think you out did yourself this year. Just amazing. Thank you! And I appreciate so much your mantra of “no rules”

I love that scarf and have been eyeing it for awhile now but how do you pick a scarf that will work with most things? Does it need your neutral as well as your accent colour or more blends with what you have….hmmm always a dilemma for me yet you do it so beautifully with all your scenarios. If one is going to buy an expensive scarf, you want it to go with more than just one or two outfits. I must train my eye better lol.

I look for scarves that include at least the neutral and one of the accents. There are SO MANY scarves in the world that I have yet to come up empty handed! Sometimes I have to look for at least a half hour, so that would be scrolling through hundreds of scarves (I can browse fast!), but treasure are out there…

I do love this wardrobe! Like Ellen I am going to look at changing out the accent just to see what I come up with.

I, too, love this wardrobe, but do not have warm colors in my closet. Speaking of scarves, I have been looking at photos of Jane Goodal since her death last week. She often wore black with a lovely scarf or shawl placed over her shoulders or tied loosely. I have been wearing my larger scarves in her honor, which friends and family seem to appreciate! I hope to keep my scarves out and use them more. And, perhaps, treat myself to a new one.
