October 2025 Six Paintings – 12 Months #4: Sun, Water Maine by Georgia O’Keeffe

October 6, 2025

Georgia O’Keeffe. So much talent in one small woman…

Today’s heroine has a wardrobe that’s quite out of balance, with many more navy and green garments than beige. But there’s no requirement that these things be exactly equal, or even close!

Her wardrobe additions fit neatly into her Weekly Timeless Wardrobe; I wonder if any of our heroines will finish the year with a perfect wardrobe that fits the template. I suspect not…

Ecru cashmere sweater – Alex Mill; brushstroke scarf – Silk and Bears; cobalt tee – J.Crew; floral tee – Lands’ End; sand bag – The Sak; “cloud grey” corduroy pants – Alex Mill; I would call Alex Mill and ask for a swatch or some other indication of the real color of these pants!; leather sneakers – Josef Seibel

I don’t see this list being perfectly filled by January…

Our heroine has a relatively small assortment of beige clothes – if she has everything that she needs, artificial rules and policies like having equal numbers of beige and blue can be ignored!

Technically, this ISN’T a two-color wardrobe like the one we have in grey and plum. But it’s close – it’s one neutral, and one range of color from blue to green, including a second neutral in navy.

So if I wanted to have a grey and purple wardrobe, maybe the colors would be every shade of grey from pearl to charcoal, and then a range of purple-to-pink as my second/third colors. Hmm…

And there’s no question that this heroine has some nice accessories!

I feel comfortable that this heroine could get dressed in the dark with very little risk! How will she wear her new clothes?

I love these colors – they don’t feel like something in which I would be comfortable here in the city, but if I lived near trees and water…

love,

Janice

Oh, that scarf and the first outfit are beautiful.
My mother only wears shades of blue, and it’s so beautiful to look at.
What I noticed in the last post is that these women probably have a simple gold chain in their jewelry box.
    She’s wearing a boucle jacket.

After the Magill shades of grey and shades of purple/pink wardrobe, this is another favourite.

I’ve tried light beige trousers but they just look wrong on me. My legs are best disguised in wide leg mid to dark tones, so I would probably just have a handful of cream clothes on my top half. I could quite easily see this as a predominantly blue/green wardrobe with a couple of ivory/cream tops plus a cardigan or jumper.

I’d be interested to see how our heroine could wear these colours in the festive season. Would it just be a matter of choosing luxurious materials such as velvet, satin, faux fur? Add subtle sparkling knitwear and lovely emerald/sapphire/topaz jewellery.

I have seen women in head to toe “winter white” outfits in cold weather. They are often very tall and blonde. I have had winter white coats in my younger days.

This is just such a pretty wardrobe for the right woman. I see her as living on the coast…anywhere from Hilton Head, SC to Tiburon, CA. It would work for women on the Maine or Washington state coasts too, with the addition of colder weather clothing too. While I do see this woman as a “coastal grandmother” type, who likes to walk the beach barefoot all year ’round, I’d love to see a dress (or skirt) in the stone khaki. I saw a perfect one, that totally fits this vibe, at Talbots this weekend. https://www.talbots.com/denim-midi-skirt/P252018606.html

Now, this is a wardrobe that I’d love to see holiday dressing for. I envision this heroine to have a Christmas tree decorated with dried sand dollars or a gorgeous Menorah made out of sea glass. What will she wear to celebrate the December holidays?

Still loving this wardrobe, along with the grey/purple one, the most. I can’t choose between them because I wear all these shades. Like Beth T., I’d be fine NOT having any or maybe just one ivory bottom and let all the rest be ivory tops. I envision this heroine wearing a dark green silk slip skirt with a lovely dark green cashmere sweater on top for the holiday season. With lots of sparkling jewelry.

I’m the same for the bottoms… I’d transition most of the cream bottoms into different styles of jeans! Because if you live on the coast (I live 10 minutes from the Beach in Washington) you live in jeans. I am envisioning a green velvet dress for the holidays, but I like your idea too Kim. Or green corduroy! Also this wardrobe could use more flannels. I’m wearing one in a teal, navy, cream, tan combo right now.

Last Christmas I wore teal velvet trousers, a cream blouse and a shimmery fluffy teal cardigan.

I really like this, the colours and items. It is not like anything I wear but I think could be a refreshing change. Like BethT I will would skip cream pants.

Love this wardrobe. Like some of the other commenters, I would skip the cream pants and add in more navy or perhaps denim. I do have a preponderance of shades of blue in my wardrobe, and a fair amount of green. The blue, whatever shade it is seems so versatile with other colors in my closet. Today I have on a light blue with orange. I am quite smitten with that combo! Have a lovely day everyone.

This one is definitely my favorite. I like it for the colors and for the art. I recently had the privilege of visiting the Albertina in Vienna. The featured exhibit focused on art movements and evolution of work in the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. (Fauvism to impressionism- and beyond?) There were so many artists I’d not had the privilege of viewing! So much art I loved, including several by Matisse that I’d never seen. 💙 I found at least a dozen paintings that would be excellent inspiration for capsule wardrobes.

Sigh. I am going to be an outlier. Although I like the painting, this wardrobe does not speak to me like the others do. After consideration, I feel it is because the blues and greens seem to be an odd mixture of brights and dulls, warms and cools.

I refer back to the painting and all the colors work, but if I were to open her closet, without having the painting as a reference, I would wonder what she was thinking. Maybe it is a seasonal thing. The summer colors seem to clash with the winter colors to my eye. I know she would never mix the two, but it still bothers me.

All the other wardrobes hang together so brilliantly, this one makes me feel like the heroine shops with a weaker plan in hand. That said, the ensembles she puts together are gorgeous.

The gold boat shoes could be swapped out for navy.

Janice, I’m not really worried about the color distribution with this wardrobe. What I see are approx. equal parts beige, navy, and accents.
    Best, Carla

This wardrobe appeals to me as it resembles my own wardrobe quite a bit. This one and The Pines as I also love teal. In my personal wardrobe my pants are navy and camel/tan plus denim, although summer is off white. As Mary says, the navy is cool and creates a mix of warm and cool in the colour pallet. Hard to find a bright lighter navy but i have found 2 pieces. This heroine is far more disciplined than I am so taking notes.

This wardrobe makes me wish I liked to wear ivory/beige pants! Like many other commenters, I love the colors but would need to sub out those pants…and in my case, I’m not sure what I’d substitute in.

With navy already in the mix, blue denim/chambray can do some of the work here but can’t really bring much variety in color (for those of us who consider navy/denim fundamentally the same). The range of green and warm tones in the capsule look great when paired with the neutrals, but it makes it harder to substitute solid accent color pants and have the same mix-and-match-ability.

Many heroines avoid print bottoms, but I would be happy with a skirt and a pair of pants that include a range of the blue and green colors (variegated prints are great for this)…but it still doesn’t quite have the same versatility of the original wardrobe.

Ultimately, I suspect I would want to substitute some sort of taupe/mushroom neutral for the beige, which would allow me to go a bit deeper in value for the pants. But since that is an *almost impossible to find* neutral that would be very hard to build an entire year-round wardrobe with, I would probably end up with shades of grey. This would be fine, but is still not as appealing visually and thematically as the ivory/beige for this whole “sea and sand” vibe.

My favorite piece in today’s additions is that brushstroke scarf! It’s stunning, would blend well with so many (all?) the accent colors, and has that hint of purple that suggests a possible “peacock colors” direction if the heroine wanted to expand her color palette in the future. I think navy with purple and teal is a gorgeous and under-appreciated color combination for outfits.

I’m a sucker for anything in a colourway of blue, teal/turquoise and purple!

I love this wardrobe! With a few adaptations, it would be a lovely wardrobe for South Florida, where I live. I’m a fair skinned brunette, and I think that these clothes gives enough contrast for that type of coloring. Most of the blues and greens are saturated enough to suit my winter coloring without being too dark for our climate. This isn’t easy as my best colors are dark and jewel tones. A Facebook friend invented the term Tropigoth. That’s me.

Unlike most of you, I’m fine with the tan pants but not so much the beige tops. I’m top-heavy with relatively slim legs, and light neutrals near my face wash me out.

Well as mentioned that scarf is just prefect and gorgeous! I wanted to say that looking through all of the WTW’s I think they are filling out nicely. One heroine might think a long sleeve cotton sweater could easily go into a winter slot. Several of the pieces in all the wardrobes could slide into some other slot depending on preferences; so great job Janice. It is interesting how certain colors suggest areas and climates. Looking forward to the rest of the wardrobes.

This is gorgeous! I adore the colors and the pieces and the ways they coordinate (I know it’s the definition of a capsule wardrobe, but I just love this one).

You don’t happen to have a source on the black lace-up booties with the low heel and cuff and saddle details, do you?
