August 2025 Six Paintings – 12 Months #2: Street Lights along Klaralven River by Stefan Johansson

August 4, 2025

For years, my family insisted that I was really an “autumn,” and dressed me in shades of brown, green and gold. It didn’t really work, but looking at this painting makes me wish that I really could have that kind of warm coloring!

Our heroine for this wardrobe actually started by looking at her Weekly Timeless Wardrobe list, to see what she needed! She realized that she wanted to pick up a couple of print tops…

From there, it was so easy. She stumbled across these Dijon yellow pieces, and made the very smart decision to get all three of them. Having the solid fleece top to wear over her stripes makes getting dressed so easy…

citrine earrings – Auree Jewellery; Dijon striped shirt – Lands’ End; citrine necklace – HSN; fleece quarter-zip – Lands’ End; striped tee shirt – Lands’ End; loafers – Frye; ivory corduroy pants – Lands’ End

She’s looking very organized!

I’m quite certain that next month I will arrange our clothes divided into tops and bottoms, but for this month, arranging things by color is pretty interesting; I think it gives a different approach to building outfits:

And I’m pretty convinced that being able to more clearly see our accessories is never a bad idea!

But of course the big question, every time you add something to your wardrobe, is HOW WILL YOU WEAR IT? You didn’t just buy it to support the company that makes/sells things.

If I had the coloring that my family thought that I had, I would wear this entire wardrobe! There are beautiful women out there who can do this justice, I’m sure…

love,

Janice

Earlier posts about this wardrobe are here:  Christmas Day Introduction, January, February, March, April, May, June, July

p.s. Ten years ago, our heroine was inspired by the Northern Flicker, and I was trying to NOT be inspired by Lollapalooza…

p.p.s. For those of you who STILL don’t wash your clothes before wearing them, I share a couple of photographs from The Guardian that were taken in Chinese clothing factories. I can vouch that once clothes get to the US, they aren’t treated with any more respect…

My first thought was “all that yellow!” and my second thought was “that’s a lot of clothes!” Which is weird, because I didn’t have that same reaction to Friday’s post with all the clothes. And, pot/kettle 🤣🤣🤣 This is really pretty. I wear a fair amount of orange, but more as an accent, and in prints. Looking forward to the rest of the week. Thank you Janice!

Therefore, I would use (at least) two capsules with half the clothes. I love the colors and enjoy wearing them.
Mine is orange-brown with olive, white, and yellow.
I’m looking forward to seeing a new post every day this week.

Funny how families try to categorize us such as your family thinking you were an Autumn. Our family was comprised of blond parents and us six blond girls. Mom’s color “theory” was that blonds wore blue, brunettes pink, and redheads green. Turns out blue is Mom’s favorite color, and she’s a Summer. She was on-target for the three platinum blond daughters, but the other three of us have golden blond hair and are solid Springs. Fortunately, we’ve since figured that out and built our wardrobes accordingly. However, for special occasions such as Mother’s Day and Mom’s birthday, we like to poke fun by all wearing blue.

    What gorgeous citrine stud earrings!

Thanks for sharing the factory photos. And, uh-oh, this morning I wore a new-to-me garment unwashed, for the first time in years. I just bought a linen overshirt from Eileen Fisher Renew, and their website said the clothes were washed before being shipped. I threw it on over my tank top to bring in the garbage can from the curb, and it did feel a bit stiff and itchy with sizing or something like that. I should have read today’s post earlier, and it’s definitely getting washed before being worn again!

(If anyone’s considering ordering from Eileen Fisher Renew, this garment does look brand new, and the shipping was free and fast.)

I would be inclined to trust Renew over almost anybody else, in terms of wearing something straight out of the package. They do wash everything, and their clothes are handled piece by piece, rather than stacked in big bundles. Heck, I would trust Eileen Fisher with my ATM card and PIN…
      Renew is brilliant, isn’t it?

Yes! Now I’m looking for the right dress to turn up on Renew, and my summer Weekly Timeless Wardrobe will be complete.

(I think they must have pressed the shirt I bought with sizing or spray starch; I’m sensitive to products like that. It’ll wash right out!)

I just love this one. Growing up, I was the opposite…I was told I was a “Winter” (brown hair and eyes) but the clear jewel tones just don’t look right on me. I discovered that I’m either a Spring/Autumn as an adult. Given that my mother and older sister favor royal blue, rich purple, clear red, etc, I could never understand why the same colors that make them sparkle washed me out.

My favorite pieces are the mustard ones. It’s a great color and not the easiest to find, but when they work, they’re dynamite!

I did not know about Eileen Fisher Renew! Thanks! Regarding washing new clothes, I read that shipping containers of clothing are pumped full of formaldehyde to kill critters. THAT got me washing new clothes. And, the colorway today is not my cup of tea, but I can play with the palette and find the closest pieces in my closet. I do have a blue green pair of cotton pants and some printed tops with a bit of these colors, so, YAY, I’m in the game!

Similar story: when I was a child, my mother insisted that I wear a bright orange shirt, orange-red sweater and skirt outfit, and other things well-suited to her coloring, but the opposite of my colors. Even as an 8-year-old, I knew I liked blue and purple and NOT ORANGE – and as an adult I know I am very clearly a Summer and look ill in warm colors.

Ugh my mum was the same – I’m a warm spring and couldn’t wear icy strong colours as a child and Yup you guessed it, my Mother who had a completely different colouring and looked wonderful in rich raspberry red etc insisted on dressing me in those colours which just did awful things to how I looked.
I swore I’d be different when I had children and it was so fun as my two boys had completely different colouring to eachother and to me and I relished dressing them in colours I could never wear but liked. Of course they turned into teenagers and I haven’t been allowed to dress them since except on my birthday when my present is to dress them up like dolls before going out to dinner. Best present ever.

I had a teacher in elementary school who wore these colors, with browns too. She had VERY fair skin and hazel eyes and dyed her hair to a red I’d say the color of the dress in this collection, maybe darker. It varied, but always “autumn”. That was the first I learned about wearing the colors that flatter you. I was probably 5th or 6th grade. She was committed!

I’m intrigued that our heroine has chosen long sleeves in August and almost completed her Autumn column, yet the Spring and Summer columns have some gaps. Either she was thinking ahead when she saw these garments or she lives in the Southern Hemisphere. When we had our recent heatwaves in July in the UK with temperatures of 30-35C, our Australian cousins were coping with a shivering 2C.

My Dad was a black-haired Spring with grey eyes. When he first grew a beard, it was ginger. My Mum had dark auburn hair and dark green eyes and was an Autumn-Winter. I was blonde as a child but my hair changed to mousey brown and my eyes changed from grey to light green.

As a child, I often wore brown because it was a popular colour in the 1970’s. I had a brown trouser suit and a brown maxi skirt with yellow and orange roses on it. As I grew up, my favourite colour was lilac and I wore a lot of blue and pastel colours. In winter, I loved plum and pink. Grey was school uniform. By the time, I went to college, I was firmly into my “Summer” colours. I’d love to wear dark green but it’s too overpowering. Dark Teal is as far as I can go.

She was confronted with a clothing market that was terribly picked over! I won’t show things here unless the full range of sizes are still available, and that’s becoming more and more difficult for summer things…

I love this one! I was once convinced I was an Autumn, too. Turns out I’m really a Warm Spring, so close, but not quite.

Several new pieces of my summer wardrobe are ivory. It’s kind of obvious that I’ll get a lot of mileage from them. I just didn’t realize how much. It reminds me that it’s always surprising how far you can push any color to work multiple ways if you keep a disciplined palette.

I love those pictures at the end of your article. Real people making clothes. Seeing the full circle. Yes, wash your pants, but also, see the hands that made them too.
