Oh, how I admire this painting!
You could easily shop with these colors in mind: warm but NOT reddish browns, very muted olive, ivory and cream…
Subtle
She’s got really vivid coloring. Her hair is every shade of orange and brown, that all mixes together in glorious, gorgeous auburn. Her eyes are cool brown, with highlights of olive, and a color that’s almost taupe. Silvery? Hard to describe, that’s for sure!
So she dresses in the most subtle colors, so she will always outshine what she’s wearing…
Once the weather starts to cool down, she takes a couple of four day trips – leaving Monday, coming home on Friday. Just enough time to see friends, and art, and eat some good food!

Cotton bandana – At Home With Ray; earrings – Ettika; tee shirt – GAP; cardigan – Alex Mill; flats – Franco Sarto; bag – Viola Castellani; pants – Alex Mill
She might go to New York, or Boston. And maybe to Chicago, or Minneapolis. Or anywhere she has friends, or where there’s going to be an art exhibit that she wants to see. She packs the same small assortment of things for all of her trips:

Scarf – Artifact.; earrings – The Met Store; crystal collar – BaubleBar; bracelet – Saachi; linen shirt – J.Crew; ivory tee – Lands’ End; zipped sweatshirt – Varley; denim skirt – Frank & Eileen; cardigan – Americandreams; boots – L’Artiste; ballet flats – Cliffs by White Mountain; barrel jeans – GAP
For now, this is her current travel capsule wardrobe. She feels pretty confident that there’s no BAD way to put these clothes together into daily outfits:
Some of her outfit possibilities are here:
I love the idea of having a designated travel wardrobe that one packs repeatedly. This would certainly make travel just a little bit easier, wouldn’t it?
love,
Janice
p.s. Eight years ago, I used this same painting in an experiment about starting with black and ivory, and then adding a variety of accent colors. I may need to do this again some time!

This capsule is so beautiful.
You must have looked in my closet, Janice. These are my neutral colors (besides dark blue).
And it’s inspiring me about what to pack for our short trip next week.
Oh, I just love this! I don’t have auburn hair or hazel eyes, but I wish I could wear this wardrobe. You have curated a neutral wardrobe that is anything but dull and I’m here for it. I did go back to look at your first iteration with this painting and it’s just as fantastic. The colors here really do shine, despite being subtle. Olive looks poopy on me, but I could see recreating this in my own shades of blue and feeling like a million bucks.
Well done, Janice! I also hope you’ve rested up from your trip!
I’ve never liked olive or “sludge green” on me, though it looks fabulous on my Autumn husband and daughter.
Tbh, I prefer the earlier incarnation of this wardrobe where you added texture to the pieces with cable knit, metallic, velvet and silk. Satin and embroidery would reflect the materials in the painting too. Adding the texture took a basic wardrobe to the next level.
I’ve realised that I need that additional interest to make me stand out but still in a subtle way. So my interpretation would include satin, silky or shiny materials, velvet, textured knits, subtle pattern, self-coloured or metallic embroidery.
Such a good idea for us all, always to outshine what we’re wearing.
This capsule knocked my socks off!
Yes, I agree. Quite the opposite of when the outfit wears us! This is a stunning capsule!
I just reread the look back series and was reminded how important good basic neutrals are. I think I’m going to re-check those before fall.
Yes to this idea – designated travel wardrobe !
I love this but would need to add pops of colour of periodically. Maybe some turquoise blue or fuchsia….
Please, please do revisit the 4 heroines 4 wardrobes! I love every bit of them.
Also a fan of the travel capsule – which can also be a work capsule, IMHO.
Enjoy the weekend everyone!
Cheers & blessings!
Beautiful painting beautiful wardrobe.
What a tasteful palette and item mixture. Well done!!
