Normally, she lives in white in hot weather. She seldom gets dirty, and when she does, she shrugs it off as a normal part of life. She likes the clarity, the simplicity, the way it shows off her complexion…
But this year, she’s craving bright colors! And she knows just where to start:
The colors clash. That’s how it’s supposed to work; she knows the inspiration, and she completely approves:
She studies her new bracelets for a few minutes, and decides on the three colors that will be her summer accents this year. Well, at least for this year!
She starts her planning with her favorite white things for summer:
Linen shirt – Alex Mill; earrings – Emma Holland Jewellery; necklace – Fanci Me; white gauze short-sleeve top – Caslon; bag – Luna Charles; tee shirt – Lands’ End; linen shorts – J.Crew; jeans – Alex Mill; leather sneakers – Vionic; sandals – Lands’ End
Here’s where the fun starts! She feels as if she’s colored within the lines, until she decided to go wild and grab that horse-print shirt. Why not? It’s cheery, well-made, and will look great with white…
multicolored scarf – Creature Marseille; bracelets – Fierce Lynx Designs; lapis earrings – Farra; orange earrings – Gold & Honey; blue floral top – Boden; dip-dyed scarf – Nordstrom; green & white top – Boden; orange muscle shirt – Joseph; blue cropped pants – Boden; gold sandals – Talbots; horse print shirt – Boden; flats – Anne Klein
Her timing is perfect – friends invite her to their beach house for a long weekend, and she has this assortment of things ready to go!
How will she wear these lovely goodies? Oh, she has plenty of ideas:
Is this heroine the most cheerful person anywhere she goes? Maybe not, but she at least LOOKS as if she is…
love,
Janice

Well I wasn’t convinced that the colours in the bracelet went together, especially the soft purple of the fluorite gems. I’m not a fan of bright colours but you have excelled yourself with this wardrobe bring out an eclectic mix of accent tops with white neutral and cobalt trousers. The horse shirt and Carnaval Night (Creature Marseille) scarf draw the whole thing together. That scarf is amazing and the whole effect of this wardrobe is stunning! A wardrobe to turn heads as you walk down the street! I’ve also learnt about a new artistic movement – Fauvism. What a dazzling way to begin this week? Bravo!
Hurrah for zippy colours! I love mixing colours so the first pairing my eye saw was the cobalt blue trousers and the orange top.
What a happy wardrobe for a Monday!
This reads refreshing in the heat of summer. You’ve hit another home run with accessories and beautiful accents.
Me? I love this. I am all about bright colors…and I think most true brights look fantastic together. You have picked among my favorites here too. That bold orange and royal blue combination is powerful! I’d pair the orange t-shirt with the royal blue pants and the fuchsia background scarf in a heartbeat. My one ‘wish’ item would be for a light jacket or cardigan to tie it all together. At Dillards, there are some incredible Ali Miles printed light jackets and cardigans that would be killer with this combination….it would also look fabulous with an all-white column too. Here is one that would be pretty, but there are quite a few that would work with this concept and color palette. https://www.dillards.com/p/ali-miles-burnout-abstract-floral-print-point-collar-34-cinched-sleeve-zip-up-jacket/519541748
Have a great week, everyone!
That jacket would be perfect!
How was your move???
hugs,
Janice
What a bold capsule! In a good way. I always like these bracelets.
I can’t tell you how happy I am to see some color! I wouldn’t be able to do white as the neutral, but I would certainly do all those colors. Thank you Janice!
I think a lot of us would probably substitute black, navy, or beige for the white, but sometimes we just need to break out and WEAR our clothes. I flew to Ireland and back in beige pants and they remained spotless; I’m sure I’m jinxing myself!
hugs,
Janice
I love this and it works beautifully with my decision to have neutral basics and pops of color. I’ve learned to love color since I let my hair go white. You’ve inspired me to get a beaded band for my new Apple Watch and use it to cultivate my fall capsule. Shopping the closet first.
Your color combinations provide some of the best packing and capsule wardrobe ideas! Starting with a scarf or a bracelet gives me more flexibility than the usual two neutrals that most blogs suggest.
That being said, I noticed most of your color combinations are suitable for autumn/spring folks, with very few for summer/winter colorings. Would you consider posting a few of those tones from time to time?
P.S. I also appreciate your links – you work with all different price points!
Dear Phyllis – it’s interesting that you think I work a lot with warmer colors, because I feel like I force everybody to look at tons of black and brights (my personal favorites!). I try to keep things mixed up for everybody, but I will remember your request. And thanks for the complement – it makes Monday mornings much brighter to know that my work is appreciated!
big hugs,
Janice
I’ve been reading The Vivienne Files from the very beginning, and I wanted to reply to the comments about the color palettes that Janice has been using. I agree with her assessment that overall she has used lots of brighter colors with black and other neutrals. Lately it seems more subtle (or drab if you prefer) colors have shown up in various wardrobes. It’s difficult to assess the preferences of a large group, and I commend Janice for trying to cover all types of preferences. If a wardrobe doesn’t strike my fancy, I try to take an intellectual interest in the combinations, the shapes, the textures of the clothing. Browsing the archives is always fun, too. As for today’s offering, I love it!! Keep up the good work, Janice. And thank you!
You’ve put together another beautiful capsule, Janice.
I think white makes a crayon color shine even more intensely.
And I’d like one of those bracelets for my birthday.
By the way, I’m fascinated by the blog retrospectives; I’d like to read all the posts again sometime.
Janice, thanks for this fun color boost to get my morning going! I love the different patterns and accents on the shirts today! I was over at Boden dreaming and am falling in love with the Kelly green color they have going this summer. There is a cutout sweatshirt in Kelly green that would be fun with this wardrobe.
What a cheerful capsule wardrobe. I am a big fan of bright pops of colour. That horse print shirt is awesome. Unfortunately shirts and i do not get along well.
I often get lots of compliments and smiles when i wear colour. The pharmacist even gave me a nice compliment the other day, saying how nice it was to see someone wearing colour instead of all the black and white most people are wearing even for summer lol.
Have a cheerful week everyone.
I agree with Phyllis!!! It seems like most of the posts are drabs….I’m all about black, white and COLOR!!! Think the crayon box of eight minus the brown! I also LOVE the loopbacks……even though I read every post, it’s amazing how fresh they feel. Thank you SO much for all that you do….it is so appreciated!
The last time I went to England (always 3 weeks at the end of August and beginning of September) my core neutrals were black and tan with a turquoise color accessory. It was all so easy! Black and tan look tranditionally equisite together, while the turquoise added a summery hit. I’d pack the same the next time too, I’m sure.
I’m trying to figure out how to change my thumbnail photo. I no longer look like this!
The way the beads are … beaded together with the metallic spacer beads between them helps to bring the colors together nicely on the bracelet. In my mind the colors don’t “clash” even if they are from different corners of the color wheel or different tiers on the value hierarchy… there are many ways for colors to go together or complement each other and a wearer, as you point out, Janice!
It is a beach house, right? What does the wearer wear to go swimming?
Gosh, her friends will be super-surprised to see her new look! I love this wardrobe, and the bracelet. I had to look up drab, to check my understanding. I didn’t find any definition that reminded me of The Vivienne Files!
Did you assemble this just for me? Thank you! Haha! I wear a lot of white in the summer and always feel great wearing it along with my various colored tops. And there were the bright blue/cobalt pants! I still need to give mine a try. Thanks for the new ideas!
As a long time reader, I feel there is something for everyone related to the various seasonal color palates. Like someone else mentioned, I adjust colors with my eyes to suit my own personal coloring. And frequently I find things from your color palettes in my own closet. Hooray for this wardrobe today!
