It’s getting to be that time of year…
She LOVES a Party…
Which is a good thing because she goes to quite a few! This year, she’s keying all of her party outfits around her new bracelets…
She’s including navy in her plan because she can include jeans and navy pants that she already has! But she collects evening bags and is a sucker for a beautiful dangly, sparkly earring…
Her travel outfit is pretty restrained – as much as she likes to dress for a party, she also doesn’t want to be terribly gaudy and inappropriate in transit!
Packing is such a joy – this is what she’s taking with her:
She collects everything together the night before she leaves and is just a bit giddy at the thought of her upcoming long weekend of fun!
She ponders what she will do with this delightful assortment – everything from a “kind of relaxed” party after a football game (no, she’s NOT going to the game – she’s going to stay with the hostess and help prepare) to cocktails at a lovely restaurant that just opened:
Nothing over the top – just warm, bright, cheery holiday dressing!
I could do this…
love,
Janice
p.s. Ten years ago, we looked at red coats – never a bad idea!

It made me smile:) A nice start to a cloudy day.

One precaution (from a woman with more Fierce Lynx bracelets than she can count): Backpack straps can rub the bracelet when you take the pack on and off. I’ve stopped wearing the bracelets in transit because I don’t want to break one.
Alison says
Ardyth (and anyone else who experiences a break), I will happily restring any of my bracelets free of charge if you ship them back to me. I just ask that you cover postage, or I can ship them with a new order if you make one. I know that despite our best intentions, the stretch cord can break. It is the downside of not using clasps, but not having to fiddle with clasps is more than worth it in my books.

That is very kind of you to offer!

So pretty and so wearable. Just the right balance.

I just love this! It’s a festive ‘on the casual side’, but clearly festive. All pieces look cozy, practical and yet incredibly fun. That polka dot sweater from Boden may be a must need for me! I love that it screams holidays, but I could see myself wearing this for St. Patrick’s Day too!
Well done!

Oh me too! I just love that it’s a sweatshirt. Very elevated.

This is such a clever approach to travel + party dressing. The clothes aren’t specifically party clothes but they are party-ready with the accessories. Also, I love that the colours are jewel tones but are slightly muted.
That blue paisley blouse is so lovely as are her accessories!
On the housekeeping side, I followed many of the links and noticed that the Macy’s items all have a “not available” note on them. Perhaps their site is undergoing technical issues now. Hopefully, they’ll get it fixed quickly today.

I wear very little jewelry, but I always admire these bracelets. Always an excellent combination of colors and stones. And, of course, this little set of clothes is also great, if also not quite my style. Except for that flannel shirt! 😍

The wear three in transit and carry a six-pack is such a genius approach which I use as a starting point. For longer travel, you can easily add a top, a pivot piece, a bottom and a dress.
Loved the throwback about about what to wear with red coats, such statement pieces that never fail to bring comments. My current red coat is a pea coat I bought a few years ago from L.L. Bean. The color was called “Volcano” and it is startling.

What is a “pivot piece”? I don’t remember seeing that term before.

I like that this capsule is a bit of a counter-example of the more typical travel capsule that emphasizes mix and match potential. With 5 tops and 3 pants (ignoring the cardigan that layers over one top), a heroine could pick pieces that yield 15 different outfits (base outfits, I mean – of course, these can be styled with various accessories to generate various final looks). But this capsule with more distinct colors still yields about 12 different outfits (as I see it), which is plenty of options. Of course this assumes that you consider the versions of outfits with blue jeans as distinct from the versions with navy pants. But if you consider the jeans and navy pants kind of interchangeable with the navy pants, that knocks you down to 7 different outfits (with the option to go more casual with jeans or dressier with navy pants).
And 7 is still probably enough different outfits for many people if they really like each one. Personally, for a capsule I would probably prioritize fewer outfits I’m really happy with over more outfits that I don’t like as well.
This capsule really highlights the usefulness of a pair of blue jeans in a capsule because they really do work with just about anything.

*I mean to say for a _travel capsule_ I’d prioritize fewer outfits I’m really happy with

This is great. Love the fact it has different colors to relieve any boredom of wearing same color for x amount of days! Polka dot top not my favorite, but that’s just because I don’t typically care for dots. Love the Paisely though! And of course any Jessie Zhou scarf is a hit with me.

Wow – this is “glam-casual” dressing; perfect for when someone says “Just come as you are”. However, you both know that they expect a modicum of effort but nothing ‘over-dressed’. It is a fine line to tread but I’m just about nailing it with plain trousers and a subtley sparkly jumper.
This is my winter dressing – sparkly jewellery with normal clothes but my trousers would be needlecord and velvet. Boden has put the red necklace with a red cable knit jumper. I have a chiffon navy and purple paisley shirt which I was debating whether to put away for summer or wear it with a long-sleeve t-shirt. I now have my answer, so thank you. I have a silver velvet bag which is large enough to hold everything but looks dressy without trying too hard.
I’d love some velvet shoes for indoor parties when you know that the host insists on you removing your outdoor shoes but it is too cold to wander around in stocking feet (I hate that). Why do they insist on this when you might not have another pair of shoes to wear and slippers just look wrong?
Gone are the days when I had a red coat. Mine is now pink.

Where I’m living, we already have three inches of snow and it’s about 15 degrees fahrenheit according to my converter from celcius so I’m afraid I would definitely be “one of those hosts” who would insist you take off your outdoor shoes for my party. And then I’d give you a plastic bag with your name at the front door to put your boots in when you take them off and put them in the coat room. And I love the idea of a pair of velvet indoor shoes for the holidays for exactly that reason.

Sapphire, ruby, and emerald what a great combination.

As I understand, a pivot piece can be either a first or second layer so it does double duty. Examples are:
– A button shirt such as flannel than can be worn alone or over a tee.
– A crew-neck sweater that can be worn solo or layered over a turtleneck
A triple-top combo could be a long-sleeved tee as first layer, flannel shirt as second layer and sweatshirt as third layer. Here’s a link to show how this and pivot pieces work:

Thanks for your post & direction to related The Vivienne File post. Both very clear explanations.
Here Down Under we do a lot of layering. One trick you can do if you are like me and need many colours in your wardrobe is to have different colours in the layers as in reality you can’t always see what is under a second or third layer.

Thanks for the explanation!

To Debra in Indy: thanks for that link! Exactly the strategy I have been looking for!
Also, to all who partake: Happy Thanksgiving!
And Happy Thursday to everyone!

Very nice colors, I particularly like the accessories.
I’m looking for a coat in this beautiful burgundy.
