Want to Fit In? Start With Art – Pines and Sky by Walter J. Phillips

October 18, 2024

She’s going to the whole Homecoming thing – the game, the pre-party, the actual dance, (which is allegedly SUPER casual…), the brunch. Her friends persuaded her, and so she’s happy to be going. But she doesn’t want to paint her face, wear some outlandish hat, or just in general do anything that might look foolish!

Her school colors are navy and forest green. She loves them. And she’s been using this painting to inspire her wardrobe for a while, so she’s in good shape for having things to pack.

These are the colors that she uses for her wardrobe… After a few minutes, she makes the decision to NOT pack anything in periwinkle blue. She’s always tempted, but too many colors in a travel capsule wardrobe might be too many colors. She knows what she’s thinking! (even if the rest of us aren’t quite sure…)

A simple outfit, with the plaid scarf that has been part of their school uniform for decades:

Scarf – Hortons England; malachite earrings – Caribbean Treasures; bracelet – Alex And Ani; cotton turtleneck – Lands’ End; navy vest – Lands’ End; weekender bag – J.Crew; pants – Lands’ End; boots – Trotters

She remembers, as she’s choosing things to pack, that green flatters her eyes. And her hair. And her skin.

Malachite hoop earrings – Gorjana; watch – Furla; dandelion print scarf – Artifact.; forest green cashmere cardigan – Lands’ End; heart earrings – APM Monaco; floral scarf – Bally; oatmeal merino sweater – Banana Republic; deep forest, ivory and navy tees – Lands’ End; green mini bucket bag – Hyer Goods; beige corduroy pants – Banana Republic; plaid flannel shirt – L.L.Bean; navy wool pants – Banana Republic; sneakers – Adidas; boots – L.L.Bean

Her complete wardrobe is pretty foolproof – she likes knowing that she doesn’t have to do too much thinking about how to get dressed. It’s going to be quite enough effort remembering her classmates’ names!

As always, our heroine stops for a few moments to mentally assemble outfits from her suitcase. This exercise will keep you from forgetting that you might want a clean tee shirt every day, or that you want wool socks for the football game…

I could cheerfully pack this for a long weekend…

love,

Janice

p.s. Ten years ago, we were SO ahead of our time – the Rijksmusem tickets in Amsterdam had little color palettes beside images of art. Heck, we’ve been doing that for years!

I love the colors and the basic vibe of the wardrobe but you note a dance was included in the schedule, I couldn’t determine which outfit she would wear to the dance….

Love this and could slip it right in my closet. Pine Green and Navy two of my favorites and love them together. Yesterday I had on Pine Green and Orange, which I wear less often but still love the combo. Fall is my favorite. Thank you Janice, have a lovely day and lovely weekend everyone.

Just wanted to say thank you for yet an other lovely post. It’s a treat to start the weekend like this
I am so amazed you are able to craft your posts despite your injury but I can also imagine work may be a way to distract from the pain.
Thanks again and have a good weekend.

So long as I can sit up in my very nice desk chair and not move my torso, I’m good to work. And yes, working does distract me from the pain. But eventually I have to readjust my position, and then I feel like I’ve stabbed myself in the back, and then I go back to bed!
      hugs,
      Janice

Is option number 3 what she is wearing to the dance? All the options look too warm for me for a dance situation even if it am not dancing. I would add a short sleeve tee.

I would happily wear this whole collection! Maybe adding a hat or ear cover and gloves for the big game :)

I love everything about this capsule! I just started a 75-day soft challenge to not buy anything other than gifts and groceries until 1/1/2025 … this is a great test of my resolve! The only thing I would add is a quarter-zip I bought from LLBean this past summer (Women’s Quilted Quarter-Zip Pullover, Print in Blackwatch Plaid).

I agree, too many colours gets in the way of a lovely plan.

You put the outfits together the way I do with a variety of colours.

Would never wear all the dark green together or the dark navy together without a lighter colour.
Would however wear all the light shades on their own without a dark colour.

Mixing the colours together is much more interesting than wearing them alone.

Especially when you don’t like wearing anything too dark. I find dark clothes depressing.

Hope this comment gets to you.

Love the smart casual style of these clothes.

These colors (plus rust) were my fall colors for years and years— from my earliest personal purchases in junior high, and up through about 25 years old. I’d actually forgotten that until now, but the wardrobe brought back SO many long forgotten memories.

I don’t really wear navy anymore, but if I opened my closet and this capsule iswhat I found, I’d be very content all winter long, only adding a dress or two for the holidays.

I love this wardrobe but the forest green is not one of my favorites. I was staring at it to see how I could change it up from what’s in my closet. Then I saw it – base of denim color, navy and ivory neutrals! The posts from a few weeks ago are still working ! Thanks so much Janice for those previous posts! Making my closet a better place!!

I have the storm teal flannel from LL Bean. Oh yes…I grabbed that when it was just dropping. It’s my perfect teal tone and a beautiful shirt. I also have the cashmere sweater in the same color.

    beautiful
I just got back from the wellness weekend.
I had dark green and sand-colored pants, a reed green and dark blue shirt, and a turquoise blouse (for the fine 5-course menu). Since I’m currently wearing a bandage on my wrist (bruised), I had a sand-colored cardigan with me.
P.S. and a cloth that combines all the colors and some jewelry.

Why have I not heard of this Canadian artist before? I did a deep dive into google, learning about Walter j. Phillips. Thank you for introducing us to great artworks.

Love this colour combo and since my own life is very casual, these wardrobes are great inspiration.
    Hope your healing goes well.
