Can I Wear Toast Brown With My Current Clothes?

August 19, 2024

Starting very early last Friday morning, I was asked repeatedly if the “toast brown” cashmere sweater  in this post could be worn with neutrals other than black…

This is the post, just to make it easy for you to see it again!

So I thought that I would pull together a little “French 5-Piece Wardrobe” in that lovely brown/taupe. It’s a great color – sort of warm, but not yellowish – at least on my computer screen!

Cashmere crewneck sweater – Lands’ End; scarf – Artifact.; bag – Betsy & Floss; shirt – Wit & Wisdom; boots – Sam Edelman

Maybe you weren’t convinced that this colors goes with black, so I will show it again…

Honestly, if I didn’t already have both a brown cardigan and TWO brown crewneck sweaters, I’d buy this one… I love the way these colors look together!

Black shirt – Lands’ End; ribbon scarf – Kueen; pants – L.L.Bean; black loafers – Vionic; earrings – Ippolita; shoes – Sam Edelman; skirt – J.Crew

I think it’s logical, and maybe obvious, that this colors goes with other shades of brown. But sometimes these colors can be hard to blend; it’s always wise to shop with other garments in hand, or be prepared to do a big “try-on” when a mail-ordered garment arrives.

Scarf – Artifact.; corduroy pants – Lands’ End; necklace – 1928; slingback shoes – Vince; skirt – Tahari ASL

Toast with navy? I think these look really nice; what’s your opinion?

Scarf – AcaciaZuri; navy turtleneck – L.L.Bean; chinos – L.L.Bean; necklace – Bocar; cashmere cardigan – J.Crew; skirt – J.Crew; shoes – Trotters

I’m feeling pretty happy with these next two outfits too – toast and olive(s)?

Loafers – Trotters; olive corduroy pants – L.L.Bean; scarf – Artifact.; skirt – Hasanova; earrings – Sccollection; shoes – Kelsey Dagger Brooklyn

I’m not sure about toast with grey – but I think it might be easier to evaluate on a real person, with real human coloring, and with the light falling on her garments in a natural way…

Corduroy pants – Lands’ End; second pair of boots – Børn; skirt – COS; necklace – Twine & Twig

I think it’s probably also pretty obvious that toast brown will look nice with beige! The sneakers are pretty perfect, and the scarves bring just a touch of accent color to each outfit:

Sneakers – Skechers; pants – L.L.Bean; flats – Vince; skirt – Uniqlo; scarf – Meraki Unlimited

If you’re convinced by the color, but not by the crewneck cashmere sweater, Lands’ End has a few other items in this beautiful shade, including a zipped cashmere sweatshirt, and a moc-neck tunic…

love,

Janice

Taupe-ish! Love it. I used to wear this color a lot, then it became harder to find. As to using it with grey, it looked great with a pair of grey flannel trousers, back in the day…. And if someone wanted to test drive this color or even layer it, lands end has a similar color Honey Beige supima T shirt. Such a great fall mood!

I love this “toast” color, but I would probably call it taupe or mushroom. It’s such a great shade, even for people for whom warm tones aren’t their thing. I love this exploration, but I’d be prepared to go even bolder. Toast with apple red? Toast with plum? I’m here for it!

I bought, this Australian Winter (capitalising that as it was a shocker, much colder than normal), a fluffy cashmere knit in this colour from Country Road. First cashmere jumper and I’m such a convert. the amount of people who keep coming up for illicit strokings at work!

Anyways, the colour is just so interesting. I have brown eyes and its such a flattering colour to wear. The jumper has a wide v-neck with a collar like a polo shirt so I bought the matching long sleave cotton t-shirt in the same colour. But other colours look lovely as a pop underneath though I’ve been defaulting to wearing it with a Brown and White stripe breton and a bronze silk slip skirt.

From the colour combo’s above I’m going to try it with dark olive green which I have quite a bit of. It really does look good with Navy and of course paired with Beige it is just so soothing. But I’m most excited by Plum recomended by Ellen S.

I have this sweater in this color and I love it. It was a mainstay of my tiny capsule travel wardrobe when in England this April. With black pants, blue jeans, ivory, soft olive, and print shirts and the Gee’s Bend big scarf from the Met, I was pretty set for almost anything. With a rain coat and waterproof shoes, of course. :)

I don’t wear this color on my top half, but I love it. I have several pants in toast ( I called it taupe before this post!) and they are a great neutral. Wear with black, navy, burgundy, evergreen… perfect with rich darker colors. Itso good, I bought a purse and shoes in the same color!

I call it taupe as well. I was told way back in the 80’s in the Color Me Beautiful days that I could wear this color, but I don’t! I’m a winter. I’ll be giving it a try! Again. Thanks for the inspiration.

Black and tan/toast is one of my favorite color combinations. I chose those colors for one of my first quilts and it’s still a favorite, both for me and for my friends!

I’d love to see something like this, but with greige as the common color. My hair is not gray, but it is not taupe, either.

This has been an interesting lesson in expectations. I expected to pass right over anything “toast” coloured, as I don’t particularly like anything on the spectrum fawn through to brown. And, I don’t think it suits me, and I got consistent feedback on this in my youth and middleage. (The exceptions have been two mid-brown leather jackets, and I think the textile made the difference.) Anyway, the jumper is lovely all by itself. And, it looks really nice with the navy, the grey, and the ivory, all of which are my neutrals. So much so, that I am interested to try on something in toast, to see if it suits me better now that my skin and hair are different. I do suspect it will still not be a flattering colour for me. But I do love today’s wardrobes.

As my blonde hair goes gray, it is a mix of toast and gray. I now find that I really enjoy wearing that color combo.

I wear taupe (though it reminds me of a colour I once saw described as hazelnut) with shades of teal, aqua, light blue, pink, burgundy. I have one pair of trousers and a top in this colour but the top looks grungy on me without another accent colour.

Last weekend, I managed to pack an weekend wardrobe in shades of aqua/turquoise, teal and grey. The idea for the colours began when I purchased an M&S aqua linen jacket from a charity shop last week. It went with a floral maxi dress and looked great with my grey linen trousers. I added teal cotton trousers, a white beaded tee, turquoise tee, blue and aqua floral top, aqua cardigan and white lacy jumper plus a trenchcoat and turquoise/aqua scarf. It was a simple wardrobe, packed into a weekend bag and I wore everything apart from a lacy white jumper. I only wore the linen jacket once on the Friday night over the maxi dress. I didn’t wear the linen trousers as the weather in Wales was contrary to the forecast (cool and damp) so I had to wear the teal trousers all weekend and borrow a hoodie from my son. He came up trumps and produced a plain teal green hoodie from the bottom of his wardrobe. He suggested that I hunted in menswear for teal and purple hoodies. Whilst I packed my clothes into one bag, all the rest of the stuff I have to take when I went away, took up another bag and a vanity case. At least I didn’t take my pillows as I often do though I wish I had because the hotel only provided one lumpy pillow and I had to layer my clothes underneath it to raise it to the right level for me.

That color palette sounds lovely! Re: the weather not being as expected – what do folks think about short (3-4 day) travel during transitional weather – is it better to pack the 1 pair of linen trousers and 1 sweatshirt (or your equivalent hot outfit/cold outfit) and not end up wearing them, or take your best guess and shop to accommodate? What strategies do you all employ?

Note to self. Dress for the weather in the place you are going too.

Have to be careful with colors like toast as they can wash me out, not enough contrast to my skin and hair tones. With that said, I like toast with black, (chocolate) brown, navy and beige but not with olive or gray. Again, not enough contrast for me.

I think toast, or whatever name it goes by is the perfect neutral to pair with all of the colors you mentioned and more. I always love to see the combos you come up with! I love it with the navy and with the olive. Thanks for the inspiration! – Amy

Toast with grey is my favorite! Also— I absolutely am in love with the map scarf. I think it would be a lovely one to build a whole wardrobe on.
