"We Don't Have the Funds for Retention Bonuses..."

And with that, her heart hit the floor. Working for a company that gets acquired every two years is bad enough, but at least the buyer usually tries to make it worth one's while to stick around...

Her new manager continued...

"But you know that we're headquartered in France?" (uh, yea, the accent sort of gave the secret away...)

"If your partner can get the first week of March off of work, I'd like to send you both to stay in our corporate apartment for a week..." (note that the corporate apartment is on the Rue Montaigne...)

Wow, this was much more difficult than I expected it to be!

Tee – J. Crew; cardigan – J. Crew; pants – J. Crew

This is really a great color scheme - the accent colors are sufficiently different from each other that introducing them into an outfit gives you two very different sensibilities...

And I didn't set out to find so many pieces from one source, but when I found that they had matching pieces in brown, it didn't seem like a bad idea!

So the matching brown pieces made it impossible to resist getting a brown shell, too. I think of this as a wardrobe that's ideally suited for changeable weather, or for those of us who have hot flashes...

I love this yellow...

Cream and brown together are an underrated combination - every bit as classic as black and white, and much more flattering for many among us.

Finding print or patterned clothes in these colors has proven to be REALLY difficult, so when I saw this tee shirt, I grabbed it. The lightest color here is still darker than the cream that we were targeting, but it will still blend nicely. So long as the brown shades have the same degree of red in them, blending is always a good option.

In lieu of a skirt, I thought I'd go with another pair of pants, in a different fabric. Corduroy feels VERY different in an outfit from twill or gabardine.

Now for a bit of aqua!

And another bit!

Since I skipped a brown skirt, I thought I'd skip a cream one too - this is a more casual wardrobe than the earlier versions of "1 at a Time." These are the kinds of modifications that you can freely make when you adapt this system to your own needs!

I turned the Internet UPSIDE DOWN looking for this cardigan, and then I turned it over AGAIN trying to find an image that didn't have a stupid clothes hanger (and a necklace!) on it. I failed... but this sweater was made for these colors, don't you think?

An additional bit of print might be nice - a neutral striped tee shirt is ALWAYS a good idea!

And since I've eschewed skirts so far, I thought I'd go a bit crazy with the last piece - yellow culottes. (although Stella McCartney refers to these as shorts, and who am I to argue with her?)

What a fun wardrobe, when it's all together!

What a gorgeous image, especially in late February, in Chicago!

Building a Capsule Wardrobe by Starting with Art: The Sea Seen from the Heights of Dieppe by Eugene Delacroix

As much as this painting suggests a wardrobe with a LOT of gold and yellow, I'm going to have to work around that, because those clothes are NOT easy to find! So I'm going to take advantage of the boat in the foreground, the beige clouds and distant sea, and the glimpses of blue sky. Some mother-of-pearl jewelry would be logical, no?

They Met on The Internet

Not that it's unusual to date someone you met online - much the contrary. Many of her nieces and nephews dated people they met on the internet, and she even knew of a couple of very successful marriages that started there. It's just not something she ever expected for herself...

But they kept dating, and after their 6th or 7th evening (okay, night) together, he invited her to his niece's wedding. On the coast. For a long weekend. With all of his relatives....

It was to be a mostly very casual event, with a picnic, one nice dinner, and of course the wedding itself. She and her "beau" (ahem... that feels so strange to her) will also have some time to wander about the harbor town alone together.

At least she's confident about what she's going to wear, and to pack!

She will try to be alert to any possible signals from the people around her about what's most appropriate, but she's certain that she's providing herself with plenty of options.

But the prospect of meeting his mother, his siblings, his nieces and nephews.... She feels like she's 16 years old again!

Not that that's at all a bad thing....

If you want to include 3 accent colors in your wardrobe, this is for you!

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe One Piece at a Time, 3 Accent Colors with Navy and Beige
Tee – L.L.Bean; cardigan – IDLF Uniqlo; pants – IDLF Uniqlo

Please note that, although there are a lot of accent colors here, I've tried to keep them all in the same range of intensity and saturation, so that they will all "behave" in the same way when paired with neutrals. It's a hard concept to explain, but I find that it makes a lot of different in keeping things versatile and harmonious.

(yes, there are 4 accent colors shown here, in keeping with the original request. I didn't have a lot of luck finding the raspberry color...)

Many of these steps will look painfully familiar, as I build a base of neutral colors upon which you can use accents as the embellishment. I know I harp on this a lot, but it's hard to overestimate the degree to which a solid core of  neutral pieces will make your "getting dressed" life easier.

Here's where the fun starts! Introducing a new "top" into your wardrobe, in the same color intensity and the same general "cut" as one of your favorites, is an easy way to know that your purchase will be useful. Realistically, it wouldn't be crazy to buy 4 tee shirts, one in each of your accent colors...

Cardigans can be more difficult to find, so if you find one at the same time that you're purchasing your tee shirt(s), grab them. You may never wear them together, as a twinset, but it doesn't hurt to have that option! Plus, any accessories that you find to go with one item will immediately work with both?

While this might not be your kind of tee shirt, I like to include things like this from time to time, just to show the possibilities for a garment to bring some whimsy to your wardrobe!

If a cashmere cardigan isn't in your budget, or you can't wear wool, or you can't stand the idea of anything "fluffy" in the hot weather, look for a nice cotton cardigan. These, from Lands' End, come in a ton of colors!) (the cardigan shown below, in "featherweight" cashmere, comes in 20 colors, too.)

Including a couple of different silhouettes of cardigans in your wardrobe can give you a feeling of variety, even though you're sticking pretty closely to a uniform of "cardigan, tee, pants or skirt." If anybody comments that you wear cardigans a lot, compliment them on their observational skills, and then help them find a hobby...

THIS is the reason that you're careful to always carry swatches (or pieces of embroidery floss) in "your colors" with you. When you see something like this, your heart says YES, but your brain says "are you sure?"

And, in fact, you are sure! This tee is almost a perfect match for the cardigan we just added to this wardrobe...

For me, personally, this wardrobe still needs a navy tee shirt... but this still gives you a ton of options, and a lot of ways to indulge your preference for pretty accent colors. On days when you need or want to dress more soberly, you can do that, too!

The browns are up next, and I'm going to tack the concept of putting accessories, 1 piece at a time, with some of these wardrobes. Cross your fingers that I don't get too confused...

love,
Janice
