Pantone, bless their silly hearts, actually gave us TEN "new" colors for Spring and Summer 2013.  Now we, as wise humans, understand that you can't invent a color, but we also appreciate that the Pantone nod of approval means that these colors will be available in stores.  So if we're considering a new accent color for 2013, we are going to have choices...

Dusk blue is pretty, versatile, flattering to most of us, and easy to mix with your current core wardrobe.

I get LOTS of questions about what to wear with scarves - many people seem to feel that they're not wearing their scarves as often as they should.  So I'm going to walk you through what I think of, when I see a scarf for which someone wants suggestions.

First, the obvious way to wear a scarf - match the colors!  Wearing a scarf with two differently colored garments can make it clear that this ensemble wasn't an accident.

Scarf – Hermès Reve des Corail, sweater – French Connection, white jeans – Acne, suede loafers – Tod’s, white shirt – Frank & Eileen, red velvet jeans – J. Crew, shoes – Converse Chuck Taylor

Next, it's always easy to wear almost any scarf with black!  The addition of another accessory in a similar color ties it all together.

Scarf – Hermès Reve des Corail, shoes – Pas de Rouge, quilted bag – Chanel, sweater – Peter Jensen, leather skirt – Marc by Marc Jacobs, boots – Acne, bag – Jil Sander

Moving just a bit further afield, I think of what other neutrals are obvious with the primary color of the scarf - in this case, grey and navy are easy choices of happy color contrasts with the red and white of the scarf.  As I always do, I toss in another red accessory to show that this choice was part of a plan, and not just an afterthought.
Scarf – Hermès Reve des Corail, sweater – Organic by John Patrick, grey flannels – Jaeger, leather bracelet – Balenciaga, grey loafers – Marc by Marc Jacobs, cord bracelet – Sabrina Dehoff, navy dress – Tory Burch, sandals – K. Jacques

My last thought will be of more non-traditional neutrals - warm colors that look great with a touch of red...

Marie & Antoine Lavoisier, by Jacques-Louis David

He was a really landmark scientist, sadly beheaded in 1794, and later exonerated.  Small consolation...

There's a lovely little Hotel Lavoisier in the 8th arrondissement in Paris, too.

But I was reminded of him yesterday morning, when I was packing my suitcase after the end of a long holiday visit to relatives.  As is normal for the luckiest woman in the world, I had more things to bring back with me than I had expected.  So I thought that this would be an IDEAL time to test the theory of rolling clothing to pack, and the widely-held belief that this gives you (somehow) more room in your bag.

Antoine Lavoisier was the guy who originally posited the theory of the conservation of mass i.e. "matter can be neither created nor destroyed".  In our terms, there are the same number of molecules in your clothes, no matter how you arrange those molecules...

But I gave it a shot.  Maybe, just maybe, I was able to cram a little bit more into my bag, but the operative term here is "cram".  When I unpacked last night, ALL of my clothes look like they'd been rolled and squashed.  Which might be okay if you wear only gauze and crinkled fabrics.  Or if you like ironing everything...

Bottom line, I'm not going to convert to the "roll" tribe.  The object of packing, for me, is not to get as much stuff as possible into the smallest container possible, nor is it a desire of mine to look crushed and rumpled the entire time I'm away from home.

Your preferences may vary...

sculpture of Janus, the god of portals, doorways, beginnings and endings
Janus, the god of portals, doorways, beginnings and endings

I was appropriately named (if spelled differently), in that I can see two sides of many issues.  And that's certainly the case with the question of having a personal color season, or palette, or other scheme for clothing and personal adornment.

First off, I believe that it's absolutely essential for almost all of us to limit our wardrobe color palette to a manageable 6 to 8 colors.  Ideally, I'd think three neutrals and three to five accent colors.  This limitation makes it much easier to shop, to coordinate garments and accessories, and to have those serendipitous moments when (this happened to me this morning) your can reach into your closet and grab a scarf that exactly matches the stripe in the argyle of your sweater.  This is not boring, this is disciplined, focused, self-aware...
a color scheme of black, white and two grey neutrals, with accents of red, blue, purple and pink
my colors, currently...

And I do think that there's merit in getting opinions about colors from another person, especially someone who's trained to do that sort of thing.  We all have varying degrees of blindness in terms of looking at ourselves; an objective opinion can be useful.

I abhor anything that puts people in pigeonholes.  I do not WANT to share a season with 25% of all people on the planet.  While I might share certain commonalities of coloring with many people, I have enough unique qualities - mine alone - that a pre-packaged palette of swatches offends my sense of individuality.

And I've never quite bought into the idea that a person is entirely "cool" or "warm".  I am very fair skinned, with ash brown hair turning white, but my eyes are almost orange, with a purple ring around the iris.  Just in my eyes alone, there's a combination of warm and cool.

Belovedest is another case in point; golden blond hair, freckles, red beard, and icy blue eyes.  Very warm coloring, and looks particularly handsome in cool shades of blue.  There is a lot of merit in the idea of using colors opposite of your own to accent your distinctiveness.

So my bottom line on color choices - trust your gut.  What did you want to wear when you can first remember wanting to choose your own clothing?  (in my case, it was black!)  What colors do you just plain like the most?  What gets you the most compliments?  What resonates with your psyche?

I have a theory that a wardrobe could be build around any six colors.  It might be incredibly difficult, but I believe it's possible.  The more unusual, the better - be your own person.  Get your own style.  Wear your own colors.  And then go on with the rest of your life and do amazing things.
